Thursday, Sept. 17th
We went over the basic paragraph format and then we wrote a paragraph on what "The Lottery" says about tradition.
After the writing, we went over the second element of style: DICTION, getting up to the examples of substandard diction.
Tuesday, Sept. 15th
We went over the element of style called TONE and practiced writing a sentence in a particular tone. We then read and discussed "The Lottery," noting the TONE SHIFT and the THEME. We will continue with this story next class.
Friday, Sept. 11th
We continued discussing the literary features of the Labour Day essay, which included going over "The Second Coming" and considering how it is used in the essay. We generated a CLAIM statement on what the essay says about Labour Day.
We started taking notes on the ELEMENTS OF STYLE, but we didn't get far as we went outside to get the grad photo taken. Please bring the hand out on TONE to class on Tuesday.

Wednesday, Sept. 9th
After a brief introduction to the course (please refer to the course outline posted on Teams), we wrote a writing sample. Then after brainstorming on Labour Day, we read the Labour Day essay, highlighting the IMAGERY and LITERARY DEVICES. We will continue discussing this essay on Friday. Please bring your copy of the essay with you.
