We went over the rest of "The Monster," reviewing the METHODS OF DEVELOPMENT in the essay. You will be need this on Tuesday, Oct. 20th.
We read and discussed "Miss Brill," and discussed how her CHARACTER was revealed. You will be need this on Tuesday as well. At the end of class, we brainstormed on the ORIGINAL ESSAY you will be writing next week.

Wednesday, Oct. 14th
We finished discussing "Just Lather, That's All," reviewing key short story terms in the process. Then we went over the last element of style: methods of development. We practiced identifying these, and TONE, and RHETORICAL FIGURES in the essay called "The Monster." We are in the middle of going over the answers, and will finish this next class. Please bring back the essay.
Friday, Oct. 9th
We went over the RHETORICAL FIGURES that you learned and wrote an example of on Teams, then we read Martin Luther King Jr.'s I Have a Dream and identified TEN DIFFERENT rhetorical devices that he used in the speech. This is something that you will be doing in the end of unit composition coming up in the next two weeks. After you handed in your papers, we read and discussed "Just Lather, That's All" (191). If you were absent, please read this story for homework. A copy has been loaded to today's thread on Teams.

We went over the rhetorical devices worksheet, and then we signed up for an UNFAMILIAR RHETORICAL FIGURE. Each of you picked a NEW RHETORICAL FIGURE from the American Rhetoric website. Look up your term, examine the examples and then make up your OWN ORIGINAL EXAMPLE of this device. Please post the device, the definition, and an ORIGINAL example of this device on Teams before next class.

Monday, Sept. 28th
We finished discussing "The Destructors" and wrote a THESIS STATEMENT on the story. This should have been posted to today's thread on Teams.
We started going over SYNTAX and will be applying what we've learned to our writing.
Wednesday, Sept. 23rd
Since only 4 of you did the homework of reading "The Destructors," I gave you 30 minutes to read the story. While you did this, the four who had read the story looked for quotations on EXISTENTIALISM/NIHILISM, GANGS, LEADERSHIP, and HISTORICAL CONTEXT. Sylvia began sharing her findings on existentialism/nihilism. You should have been taking notes as we will be writing on this very soon. We will continue our discussion of the story next class. If you have not read the story yet, do so. You can find a copy on Teams.
Monday, Sept. 21st
We finished going over the DICTION, which included identifying the level of diction in each of the passages posted on today's thread on Teams. The notes on Diction are also on this thread. We then practiced writing two complaint letters, one in FORMAL STANDARD and the other in SUBSTANDARD diction. There should be a DISTINCT contrast between the two.
We brainstormed on "gangs" and "leadership," and then we discussed existentialism and nihilism as we began reading "The Destructors." This is a LONG story, so we did not get far. Please finish reading the whole story for homework. We shall discuss this next class.
Thursday, Sept. 17th
We went over the basic paragraph format and then we wrote a paragraph on what "The Lottery" says about tradition.
After the writing, we went over the second element of style: DICTION, getting up to the examples of substandard diction.
Tuesday, Sept. 15th
We went over the element of style called TONE and practiced writing a sentence in a particular tone. We then read and discussed "The Lottery," noting the TONE SHIFT and the THEME. We will continue with this story next class.
Friday, Sept. 11th
We continued discussing the literary features of the Labour Day essay, which included going over "The Second Coming" and considering how it is used in the essay. We generated a CLAIM statement on what the essay says about Labour Day.
We started taking notes on the ELEMENTS OF STYLE, but we didn't get far as we went outside to get the grad photo taken. Please bring the hand out on TONE to class on Tuesday.

After a brief introduction to the course (please refer to the course outline posted on Teams), we wrote a writing sample. Then after brainstorming on Labour Day, we read the Labour Day essay, highlighting the IMAGERY and LITERARY DEVICES. We will continue discussing this essay on Friday. Please bring your copy of the essay with you.
