La3amon's Brut: The Full Reading Text

About: Rosamund Allen has recorded and re-recorded painstakingly this very long and wonderful historical text from 2012 through 2017. This full recording of La3amon's poetic history is now available for the first time. Coming from a period and a place when and where the full transition from Old English to Middle English was still taking place, this full recording reflects Ros Allen's lifetime study of this text. The Chaucer Studio acknowledges with gratitude permission from the Early English Text Society to present this recording of La3amon's Brut. The recording is based on the two-volume edition of G. L. Brook and R. F. Leslie, EETS OS 256 and 277 (1963, 1978). We are also indebted to the Oxford Text Archive for the digitized version of the EETS Edition, from which the text accompanying this recording was prepared by Ros Allen, along with assistance and advice from her colleagues Rosalind Field, Lucy Perry, and Jane Roberts.

La3amon's Brut differs from its sources. Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britannie and Wace's Roman de Brut were both written to an elite Norman audience but La3amon wrote in a time of great political turmoil, civil war, and determination of the future regal succession. La3amon's Brut was the first English language account of the story of King Arthur too and presents some significant differences in narration from its predecessors in telling the legendary history of the Britons.

Celebration and launch at 'Brut in New Troy' conference: We are thrilled to feature a short presentation about La3amon's Brut: The Full Reading Text, including an exclusive audio clip of Rosamund Allen's reading of the Brut, at the beginning of the social hour on Friday 25 June, the first day of the conference. This social hour begins at 18:45 BST (13:45 EDT, 10:45 PDT). It follows the plenary address by Professor Jane Roberts, who will be speaking about La3amon's Brut.
