ELENE AND GEORGE BRUNS OFFER BOTH PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE.
George brings to camp the unique perspective of having played and coached at every level of basketball. He played professionally with the New York Nets. An All-Met player and Hall of Fame member at Manhattan College, he later became a five time All-Star and Player-Coach in the ABA. He was also honored as the Coach of the Year at McClancy High School.
George is an Professor Emeritus at Nassau Community College. The 2023-24 is coaching his 22nd season as Head Coach of the Manhasset High School Varsity Boys' Team. He also served as Head Women's Basketball Coach at Nassau for eight years, and was named Coach of the Year twice.
His team won the 2010-11 Nassau County Championship. In the 2018-2019 season he guided the Indians to the Nassau County title. They went on to become the Long Island Champs by defeating Suffolk's Wyandanch High School! In anticipation of this game, George was featured in a Newsday article, "Manhasset coach George Bruns has fond memories of Coliseum: Bruns played there with the ABA Nets in the 1972-73 season and now is returning with the Indians, who are competing for the Long Island/Southeast Regional Class A championship." Manhasset proceeded to win this game to advance to the STATES in Binghamton in early March, a first for the team since 1986. They were defeated in the semi-final game in the Class A Final Four.
Manhasset won the 2021-22 New York State Class A Championship in Glen Falls bringing the State title to Long Island. This past season, Coach Bruns led his Manhasset team to the Nassau County Championship Finals. Coach Bruns continues to stress the importance of skill building and teamwork to help players and teams reach their potential.
He received Nassau County Coach of the Year honors for leading his team to the 2021-22 County Championship and has been awarded Conference Coach of the Year numerous times.
Elene is the supervisor of all off-the-court activities. Her long association with basketball and her experience as the mother of three children and seven grandchildren provides that special dimension which can be so important to the happiness of a camper spending a week at camp.
