This page contains general information about the Student Learning Survey (SLS). If there is any other information that you would like us to include here, please email us at sls.brunei@learn.edu.bn
The Student Learning Survey (SLS) is a series of online survey forms designed to help English Language, Mathematics and Science teaches gauge their students' performance in these domains. Except for Science, both English Language Literacy and Numeracy forms are administered to all academic year levels from Year 2 to Year 10. (Science is only available for Year 5 to Year 8)
To understand students' proficiency, in English Language Literacy, Numeracy and Science.
It will be conducted using an online system, students will use devices, in ICT labs under strict conditions.
It is scheduled to be held from 26th January 2025 to 28th February 2026.
Schools can set their own schedule. Please email your school's SLS schedule to sls.brunei@learn.edu.bn; stating your school's name and other important details (domain, year etc)
SLS can only be conducted during school hours.
30 minutes for Literacy Y2 - Y10
40 minutes for Numeracy Y2 - Y6 / 60 minutes for Numeracy Y7 - Y10
45 minutes Science Y5 - Y8
Link for student registration is given to Focal Persons only. To register your Focal Person, please click here
A focal person needs to appointed by the school.
Focal persons register here.
Focal persons will be granted access as editor, exclusively and securely, to an online spreadsheet. CAU will have access to it as well.
Focal persons must complete the online spreadsheet with student details such as name, gender, year level, date of birth. Focal persons can copy and paste student details from their school registry onto the online spreadsheet.
Students will be assigned formcodes. It is important that they choose only their assigned forms during the survey. They will not have access to the survey if they choose other forms.
There will be no immediate individual student report.
However, schools will receive their students data, covering learning objectives only, for schools' reference. A school report will be available after data analysis by CAU.
Special Education students in the Individual Education Programmes (IEP) and Special Applied Programme (SAP) are not required to take the survey. As well as BTEC students. Even if they are registered and given passcodes, they maybe excluded from doing SLS.
Collaboration Notice
The sheet should be filled with students' details from Year 2 to Year 10 in current year ONLY, where applicable. A new sheet "Students_data" is the only sheet that will be read by the system.
Registered Focal Persons will be given a link to a Google Sheet which is secured for their school. Focal persons, will be given access as editor to the document.
Please enter student details according to the template given in students_data sheet (in your Google Sheet, accessible by individual school).
Please consolidate all students' details in ONE SHEET which is the students_data and not in separate tabs/sheets. Please use filter function to separate students by level, class etc.
Verify the document by making sure there are no typing errors.
The online Google Sheet is the collaboration tool between CAU and the school. Your access to the online spreadsheet will remain open until your access privilege changes.
CAU will generate formcodes for the students, and FP's access will be changed from editor to viewer to secure the document.
Next year, please verify the document to prepare for 2026 SLS, making sure that students know their form codes by level and domain.
FPs need to verify the document before 2026 SLS especially with regards to student movements (student transfer, new student register, student leaving, retention).
During 2026 SLS, FPs can download the Google Sheet document and print out the sheet according to level and/or class. Participating students can be given printouts containing their names, their passcodes and their assigned form codes. Click here to learn how to use mail merge

To ensure no duplication, only focal person is authorised to report the movement using an online form here. Once the student's data has been entered, we need to verify whether the student has been registered in the database, otherwise a new permanent student id will be issued.
Schools' sheets stay live and dynamic (adding, deleting, updating students).
Focal persons can update the spreadsheet anytime until the deadline where there will be a freeze on passcode and form code generation, since we need to prepare the assessment system to accommodate the new student movements. Even though STARS ingests edits on the schools' sheets, FP still need to inform us, by email or telegram, of the movements, edits, changes, so we can process them accordingly.
Yes, deletion is one of the process that you can do if you have access to the online spreadsheet. You can also, update, delete, read and create new student. You can copy and paste from your own school student registry to the online spreadsheet. Please verify that all your student info is correct and updated. The online spreadsheet will be secured at least ONE week before SLS begins, for form codes generation.
Remember that Schools' sheets stay live and dynamic (adding, deleting, updating students).
Congratulations for finishing the update and once you have informed us by email that you have finished, CAU will secure the document to update the spreadsheets with students' form codes.
As long its not the same subject teacher as the domain, students are trying in the survey. Example. BM teacher supervising SLS students in ICT lab during BM period.
Blank paper and pen/pencils are allowed for workings
Year 8 and 10 students are allowed to use a calculator for Numeracy and Science.
It can be released to students unless marked otherwise.
