S1 & S2 STEM club starts Monday 29th September. Ask your teacher.
Welcome to Science!
So, what is Science?
Well, it is a way of understanding life, the universe and everything in it. Science is relevant to all of our lives and the skills you develop whilst studying Science are probably more important now than ever. Science is not a just a list of facts to learn, it is a process, it is a way of understanding based on evidence. If the evidence changes, we have to change our understanding. For example, 500 years ago the 'most intelligent' people on the planet believed that Earth was the centre of the universe, we now have a better understanding (it always makes me think, what do we believe now that we won't believe in 500 years?). This is one of the things that makes Science so exciting, it is constantly changing and our understanding is always improving.
The three main branches of Science are Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Biology literally means the study of living things. This includes the human body, plants, animals and micro-organisms as well as how all living things interact with one another.
Chemistry is a study of the building blocks of everything that exists and how they react together. It is sometimes referred to as the 'central science' because it links in with Biology and Physics.
Physics studies matter (anything that has weight and takes up space) and it's motion as well as how it interacts with energy and forces. It is a huge subject and also includes the study of space and the universe.

Skills
Curiosity - It may not have been good for cats but it is definitely recommended for humans! It is a desire to know or learn something. Learning can be difficult at times but when you do get stuck, if you are curious, you will ask lots of questions.
Literacy - Good reading is more than saying words correctly. It is also about understanding what you have read. This can be challenging and the only way you can get better at it is through practice. It is also important that you are able to communicate through writing the thoughts you have in your head. In exams, many students drop marks because they have not read the question correctly by which I mean, they have not understood correctly what the question is asking them.
You will will benefit from regularly reading Science articles and books that interest you. https://www.sciencenewsforstudents.org/
