Breast cancer surgery traditionally prioritized tumor removal which often caused breast deformities. Oncoplastic surgery is changing the standard of care by combining tumor removal and reconstruction in a single procedure, which helps preserve a natural breast appearance, function, and quality of life. Oncoplastic surgery is a relatively new field, and standardized surgical training is limited. Surgeons are typically trained to specialize in either oncologic or reconstructive surgery, and there is limited formal training that integrates both techniques into a single procedure. This project addresses the lack of educational resources by creating a 3D animation of a superomedial pedicle lumpectomy with Wise pattern reduction. The goal is to visually explain oncologic and reconstructive steps within one procedure that supports medical professionals learning new oncoplastic techniques. The primary audience is breast surgeons seeking to expand their understanding of oncoplastic procedures.
At Parkview Health Hospital, I helped develop an extended reality (XR) training module for central venous catheter placement. I collaborated with physicians and medical educators to identify a need for more accessible, simulation-based training, particularly for first year medical residents with limited exposure. My role focused on translating the clinical workflow of CVC into an interactive educational experience. I 3D modeled over sixty anatomical and procedural assets and implemented the them into Unreal Engine to create a fully navigable virtual environment. Many incoming residents have minimal hands-on experience before performing the procedure on patients. Our XR training module will be used after asynchronous didactic learning, but before the first in-person simulation. This allows the residents to learn and practice objectives for each step of the procedure and build confidence in a low-stakes environment.
