Since the launch of the first survey in 2012, the Brony Study project has launched 19 surveys, which to the best of our ability we have tried to condense here.

Wave One

The first wave of studies were headed by Drs. Edwards, joined shortly after by Dr. Redden, with Dr. Chadborn and Dr. Griffin joining the team partway through with a focus on an exploratory study of fandom and the bronies. These early studies were mainly an examination of questions we felt were important to ask and examining them through factor analysis (a method to combine items into a single factor like extraversion or group identity) which was used to follow up on in future studies. These studies looked at the brony fandom as a stand-alone phenomenon to examine what we could about them. This is also the study in which we launched our investigation into the fan typology, a categorization of bronies based on open disclosure as a fan and sense of meaning gained from the show/group.

Wave Two

Since 2015 Dr. Chadborn has been working with both Drs. Reysen and Plante on the second wave of studies, which have taken a more social psychological approach to the study of the fandom. And while the earlier studies focused on understanding who the bronies are and exploring fandom from the bottom up, the second wave has looked into testing hypotheses and relating those findings to current psychological theory (a top down approach). Since 2015 we have launched 4 additional studies and are currently planning on a new study for 2019 and the final finishing and publication of the long awaited Brony Study Book!!!!

Wave Three

In 2019, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic ended. It was soon announced that a new generation would launch. We have since then, been examining and studying the perception of the reboot....coming soon.
