What if Jane Eyre had a Tinder profile? Or if Edward Rochester had a Reddit account?
Brontë Social showcases student work that explores what the characters from the Brontë sisters' novels might say and do on social media platforms if they were alive today. In the process, the project examines the cultural and social (dis)connections between the nineteenth century and the twenty-first century.
Established in 2025, Brontë Social is part of the ENGL 3339 Global Nineteenth Century course taught by Professor Cherrie Kwok (cherrie-kwok@uiowa.edu). In Fall 2025, the students examined Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre (1847) for the novel unit in the course. Two students from that course designed this website for the class to share their work.
In Fall 2026, students in the course will read Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights (1847). (We will be watching the new movie adaptation of the novel starring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie as well.)
