Call for Papers

This workshop aims to discuss challenges and opportunities given the changing landscape of where, how, and by whom research is produced. Given the increasingly heterogeneous landscape of organizations, we provide a venue to share perspectives and best practices to foster collaboration. We welcome research papers that measure the impact of organized research collaborations and incentives (e.g. mentorship programs, industry collaborative grants, etc.), on progress in science. We also welcome perspective papers that serve as a means to share diverse perspectives on research collaborations in the machine learning community.

Research Papers (Up to 8 Pages)

We invite research papers (up to 8 pages) on developing and applying tools and techniques for collaboration in the broad domain of multidisciplinary machine learning. We encourage studies on novel techniques for collaboration among both resource efficient and resource constrained entities. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Novel scientific tools to facilitate collaboration in ML, such as

    • Tools for distributed development and review.

    • Tools that support distributed training.

    • Tools for dataset creation and annotations.

    • Tools for document drafting and reviewing.

  • Use case studies across diverse communities and teams:

    • Collaborations across demographies and geographies.

    • Collaborations uplifting underrepresented communities in ML.

  • Studies for innovative collaborative schemes like:

    • Mentorship and fellowship programs.

    • Grants and funding resources encouraging collaborations.

  • Novel datasets that study collaborations in ML Research

  • Tools and techniques to ensure fairness regarding resource allocation and monitoring for collaboration, particularly with those that are resource constrained.

  • Tools and techniques to facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration among the ML and "X" communities. Some notable examples of ML and X are:

    • ML and Economics

    • ML and Music

    • ML and Art

    • ML and Cellular Biology

    • ML and Climate Change

  • Tools and techniques that encourage collaboration across different organizations, like:

    • Innovative intellectual property rights sharing techniques for collaboration.

    • Techniques to help smoothen industry-academia-nonprofit collaborations

Perspective Papers (Up to 4 Pages)

We also invite shorter perspective papers (up to 4 pages) that provide insight into instance (s) of broadening research collaborations in the settings described above for the research papers. We encourage research papers that are "works in progress" or have fewer experiments and/or data backing their claims, to submit a perspective paper. Those with experiences that are unconventional are highly encouraged to submit.

Topics of interest include the above set of topics as well as, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Position papers on how to create research collaborations that are more inclusive, effective, and accessible.

  • Collaboration reports, including the structure of collaboration and the process by which it happened, especially unconventional research trajectories.

  • Community "white papers", i.e reports on a single community or team and how they encourage collaboration in their community or with other organizations.

Examples of Relevant Research are:

Paper and proposal submission should follow the NeurIPS style guidelines (which include a \LaTeX template). Accepted papers will be presented as posters or contributed talks. Submissions should be made via OpenReview.
