An Institution Found at the Church
"The fervor generated by the Second Great Awakening seemingly caused every religious group to want to build its own college for propagating its doctrines and for reinforcing its distinctive orthodoxy" - Thelin and Gasman, 2016, p. 7
Higher Education has blossomed into a unique and astounding entity. What was founded as means to further religious missions, has become a globally sought after achievement that increases opportunity and opens the ladder for further professional development.
In this Learning Activity, we'll identify the first Higher Education institutions to be established in the U.S. and explore how religious bodies enabled the growth of Higher Ed. We will interact with a multitude of primary sourced documents and resources from the 1600s-1700s that help us understand how the big umbrella of higher education was birthed out of chapels and churches.
