Importance of Data Accuracy

The league table is indexed by BOF number. The first set of details for a particular BOF number uploaded each year stays with them all year, regardless of what is stated on any future sets of results. A person external who is not a super-frequent trail orienteer will have to manually correct any errors. Therefore, please make sure all details are correct, in particular:

  • Name is spelt correctly with a capital letter on both the forename and surname.

  • Age class is in the standard format of M## or W##. Ages of 100+ will crash the system.

  • The club abbreviation used and all in capitals. If a competitor insists on using their foregin club, despite having a BOF number, keep it short (lowercase letters permitted).

If in doubt, ask the BriTOL coordinator for the password to the test event.

Instructions

  1. Make a copy of the results template spreadsheet and open it in the software of your choice, such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.

  2. Fill in the details and results for each competitive finisher - omit those who are disqualified.

    • Place P in the class column for competitors in the physically challenged class.

    • The final column is the competitor's position: it must be a positive number where lower scores are better. Instead of position, a competitor's score could be their time in TempO or any other metric, provided lower is better. Do not include = in the event of a tie, or anything non-numeric.

    • Extra rows do not matter, provided the BOF number is empty.

    • The competitors can be in any order on the spreadsheet.

  3. Export the spreadsheet as a CSV file:

    • In Microsoft Excel, go File->Save as and select Comma-separated values as the file type.

    • In Google Sheets, go File->Download->Comma-separated values.

  4. Upload the CSV file to the results processor and keep the newly produced file.

  5. Go to the results upload website.

  6. Select your event and the processed CSV results file.

  7. Type in the password provided by the league coordinator.

  8. Click Submit.

  9. Click Continue to calculate points and update tables.

  10. Check the error messages for any competitors that should be included in the results, and then check the provisional points allocation at the bottom of the page. If there are any problems, correct them in the CSV file and re-upload.

CSV Format

The CSV file is a plain text file. Use one line for each competitive finisher - omit those who are disqualified. Write in the data for each finisher using the following columns, separated by commas:

  • BOF number

  • Class with P for physically challenged competitors, otherwise blank

  • Forename

  • Surname

  • Age Class

  • Club

  • Position, where 1 is the winner (this can be any positive numerical scale, such as time in seconds, provided a low number scores better than a higher number)
