Activity 1: History Taking and Examination

Ask student(s) to take a focussed history from the patient (maximum 10 minutes), to include past medical history, drug history, family history and social history. This can be observed if capacity of tutors allows.
Activity 2: Diagnostic Reasoning and Case Based Discussion

Discussion and feedback. Ask one of the students to present the key findings of the case. Discuss:
- What differential diagnoses have been considered and why are these less likely?
- What investigations would be useful acutely and what are they likely to show?
- How would quinsy be diagnosed?
Feedback on history taking style & presentation (max 1 minute).
Activity 3: Prescribing

Ask the student(s) to find a drug chart and the relevant hospital antimicrobial guidelines. Ask them to prescribe appropriate initial management for quinsy, include antibiotics, steroids and fluids. They can use the BNF if needed - the QR code opposite links to the BNF.

Using local ENT guidelines and the resources below, discuss the following points:
- When are antibiotics considered in the management of tonsillitis? Discuss the role of the Centor criteria.
- What factors determine the need for admission with tonsillitis and quinsy?
- What criteria should be met before discharge?
- What follow-up and/or safety net advice is needed?
