Demonstration blood glucose machines (2 if possible), test strips, cotton wool and water, blood glucose measurement chart

Activity 1: Demonstration

Briefly introduce students to the blood glucose monitor. Demonstrate the key steps in performing the procedure including:
- Introduce yourself, explain procedure to the patient and obtain verbal consent.
- Machine calibration.
- Insert test strip.
- Wipe the finger with water.
- Obtain blood sample using appropriate lancet.
- Apply blood sample to the test strip.
- Wait for the meter to read.
- Record reading on the blood glucose monitoring chart.

Allow students to practice the skill on each other. Document readings on a blood glucose monitoring chart.
