Overview
Grade Exporter is a Chrome extension that reads grade data from a Brightspace/D2L page the user is actively viewing and reformats it into a downloadable Excel (.xlsx) file. This policy explains what data the extension accesses and, more importantly, what it does not do with it.
Data We Access
When a user clicks the extension icon and initiates an export, the extension reads the visible content of the Brightspace Grades page that is currently open in their browser tab. This may include:
Student names
Grade and score values
The extension only accesses this data when the user actively clicks a button inside the extension — it does not run automatically or monitor pages in the background.
Data We Do Not Collect
Grade Exporter makes no network requests of any kind. It does not:
Transmit any data to the developer, to Google, or to any third-party server
Store any data outside the user's local browser session
Use analytics, tracking, or telemetry of any kind
Share, sell, or rent any data to anyone
Collect health, financial, authentication, location, browsing-history, or communications data
All processing happens locally within your browser. No data is transmitted to any external server, service, or third party.
How Data Is Used
Any data the extension reads is used solely, in-memory, within the user's browser, for the single purpose of generating the Excel file the user requested. Once the file is downloaded, the extension retains no copy of that data. Closing the extension popup clears its working memory.
Data Storage
The extension does not use persistent storage (no chrome.storage, cookies, or databases) to retain any grade or student data. The only thing that persists between sessions is the exported .xlsx file itself, which is saved to the user's own computer under their control — the same as any other file they download.
Permissions
activeTab / scripting — used only when the user clicks the extension icon, to read the grade table on that specific page and generate the export.
tabs — used only for the optional Classlist ID lookup, to locate an already-open Classlist tab by URL/title.
Host access — required because Brightspace/D2L is hosted on a different domain for every institution; this permission lets the extension work on whichever institutional domain the user is using, and is only invoked when the user explicitly triggers an action.
Children's Privacy
This extension is a productivity tool intended for faculty/instructional use and is not directed at children. It does not knowingly collect data from children, and in any case collects no data from anyone, as described above.
