Did you know that early literacy experiences at home can significantly boost a child's reading skills and overall academic success? For example, first graders who are read to frequently at home are more likely to count to 20, write their own names, and read or pretend to read (Literacy Project Foundation, 2019). Additionally, children who have access to books at home are more likely to perform better in school (Reading Is Fundamental, 2021). Here are some more eye-opening statistics:
Vocabulary Development: By age 6, children who have been read to frequently will have heard an estimated 1.4 million more words than children who were never read to (Reach Out and Read, 2023).
Reading Proficiency: 65% of fourth graders read at or below the basic level, highlighting the importance of early literacy support (Reading Is Fundamental, 2021).
Academic Success: Children who are read to at least three times a week are almost twice as likely to score in the top 25% in reading compared to children who are read to less frequently (Reach Out and Read, 2023).
With this in mind, we are excited to share some fantastic resources to support your child's literacy journey at home. These activities and tools complement what we are doing in the classroom and are designed to make reading fun and engaging for your first grader.
