Active Listening Techniques
In Part One of this series, we talked about how listening is a vital part of communication and approximately 70% of communication is non-verbal. Active listening techniques can help you gain a deeper understanding of what someone is trying to communicate in a meeting or conversation. In the workplace, listening is important when interacting with customers, participating in meetings, and working with co-workers. As elementary as listening may seem, it can sometimes be hard to do. Next time you are having a conversation try these active listening techniques:
Build Trust and Rapport: This active listening technique involves gaining the trust of the person you are having a conversation with and developing a relationship in which you demonstrate understanding. Finding common ground and being empathetic can help build trust and rapport.
Demonstrate Concern: Demonstrating concern will make the speaker feel more comfortable and can keep the conversation productive. Remember that body language is important when it comes to communication and can play a big role in how you demonstrate concern. Therefore, actions such as crossing your arms or avoiding eye contact can send a negative signal, so it is important to make sure your body language is welcoming. For example, you can nod your head in agreement and make eye contact.
Ask Questions: When you're listening it is important to pay attention and not focus on your rebuttal or response. However, this doesn't mean there isn't room to ask questions. Be sure that your questions are meaningful and focus on the topic of the conversation.
Use Verbal Affirmations: When practicing good active listening techniques it is important not to abruptly interrupt because that can be frustrating for the speaker. However, you can use verbal affirmations to show the speaker that you are listening and understanding.
Find a partner and practice active listening techniques. Take turns using the prompts below as the topic of your conversations. Have one partner act as the speaker and the other act as a listener, and then switch roles.
Discuss a time you overcame a major challenge.

Be a "Pro"fessional!
Join Professional Organizations. A professional organization is a group of members with similar job titles and responsibilities or interests.
Becoming a member of a professional organization in your chosen field has many benefits and rewards. Joining professional organizations is one of the many ways to enhance your professionalism and career by giving you opportunities to interact with and to learn from other professionals in your field. It provides many networking opportunities—which is defined as developing contacts with others and exchanging information in an informal manner in order to further one’s career. Networking can also lead to new job possibilities.
Professional organizations also provide opportunities to upgrade and to enhance your skills by participating in conferences, classes, seminars, and other types of training. Networking and being a member of a professional organization definitely keeps you up to date in your chosen career. Making presentations to your fellow workers and associates at seminars or conferences gives credibility to talents and helps to enhance and promote your speaking and presentation skills. Serving on committees at various levels helps you to develop your leadership skills.
Join Career and Techncial Student Organizations in High School. You do not need to wait until you are an adult to join a professional organization. Find out if your school offers clubs such as DECA, FBLA, FFA, BPA, FCCLA, HOSA, SkillsUSA, or TSA. These organizations can help you build your skill set for future employment by participating in meetings, competitions and events.
Earn Industry Credentials. Another strong point for joining professional organizations is that many offer credentials in your chosen area. These credentials (certifications) will be of benefit to you as you begin a new career. Once hired, many companies pay for these conferences and credentials. Examples of credentials include CPA (Certified Public Accountant); RA (Registered Architect); LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse); OSHA (Occupational Health & Safety Administration); CPR and First Aid for Healthcare; ServSafe Food Safety and Handler certification; and CompTIA© and Cisco© for IT professionals.
Other Ways to Build Professionalism. Always strive to become better at being a true professional. Experts share the following tips to becoming such a person:
Always try to stay positive.
Dress like a professional in your job.
Do not use your cell phone while at work—silence it. Return calls or text while on breaks.
Be on time, and take appropriate breaks only as scheduled.
Pay attention to the details.
Use proper manners/etiquette.
Use appropriate language at all times. Do not tell jokes which might be offensive!
Offer assistance to your co-workers. Always be willing to help out on projects as needed.
Action: Research and find a professional organization in your future career. Find out facts such as: membership total, conferences, networking opportunities, and more. Next, list two reasons why it is important to your future career to join a professional organization.

How School Rules Prepare You for Work
School rules might sometimes seem like a list of "dos and don'ts," but they're more than that. They're like stepping stones to a brighter future. How? Well, they are closely connected to something called "employability skills" that we referenced in last week's Career Headlines.
What Are Employability Skills?
Employability skills are a set of qualities that go beyond academic knowledge. They help you work well with others, solve problems, and adapt to different situations. These skills are like superpowers that can make you shine in any job. Some common employability skills include communication, teamwork, time management, and critical thinking.
Let's take a closer look at how following school rules can help you develop these essential skills.
1. Responsibility: At school, you're expected to be responsible for things like homework, showing up on time, and treating others with respect. In the working world, responsibility means meeting deadlines, arriving at work punctually, and taking ownership of your tasks. So, when you follow school rules, you're practicing responsibility, which is a big employability skill.
2. Teamwork: School often involves group projects and working with classmates. This helps you learn how to collaborate with different people. In your job, you'll also be part of a team, and knowing how to get along with coworkers and share ideas is crucial.
3. Self-Discipline: Those moments when you resist the urge to check your phone during class or focus on your homework instead of watching TV? That's self-discipline, and it's a skill you'll need when you have to stay on track at work. Employers love employees who can stay focused and meet their goals.
4. Problem Solving: Remember tackling tricky math problems or figuring out complex science experiments? That's like a warm-up for real-life problem-solving at work. Whether it's fixing a broken machine or finding a creative solution to a business challenge, your school experience prepares you to be a problem-solving pro.
5. Communication: In school, we learn to communicate effectively. Whether it's raising your hand to speak in class or listening when others talk, these skills are essential at work too. Clear communication is key when working with colleagues, clients, or customers.
So, the next time you're tempted to break a school rule, remember that you're not just following orders – you're building important skills for your future career. Keep being responsible, working well with others, staying disciplined, and solving problems; these skills are your ticket to success in the working world!
Action: Think about a specific school rule you follow and how it might connect to a future job. For example, if you follow the rule of taking turns during class discussions, it's similar to respecting your colleagues' speaking time during meetings at work.
