Project Report: Automated Dust Bin Extraction from Mobile Laser Scanning Point Clouds
Funder: Rotterdam municipality
Linh Truong-Hong, Roderik Lindenbergh
Abstract: The project proposed a new method to automatically extract point clouds of dust bins installed along streets from mobile laser scanning (MLS) data point clouds. The proposed method consists of three main steps: (1) cell-based filtering, (2) sub-cell - based filtering, and (3) surface-based filtering, in which both spatial information of the point clouds and contextual knowledge of the bins are incorporated to filter data points of the dust bin objects. Contextual knowledge of the dust bins is derived from the shapes and dimensions of the recycle bins, and the relationship between the ground surface and the bin geometry. The proposed method was tested on MLS datasets of the Rotterdam city, the Netherlands, which consists of 2.84 billion points from 166 tiles covering 50m wide x 75m long for each tile. The method can automatically extract the dust bins with an accuracy of 89.1%, in which the lowest F1-score of 0.844 was found in extracting Bin type 2. Moreover, the executing time for the entire dataset takes about 163.6 minutes, which is equivalent 3.46 seconds per one million points.

Project Report: Automatic Estimation of Vertical Clearance of Highway Bridges from Mobile Laser Scanning Data
Funder: Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat)
Linh Truong-Hong, Roderik Lindenbergh, Alireza Amiri-Simkooei
Abstract: This project is to develop methods for estimating vertical clearance of overpass bridges from MLS data and to assess the impact of data quality and methodology on the quality of the resulting vertical clearance estimations. The study proposes cell-based region growing (CRG) to segment road and bridge surfaces and both cell- and Bspline-based methods are subsequently proposed to estimate vertical clearance, which is the distances between the road surface and a bottom surface of the bridge superstructure.
