This land was admitted to the union in 1821 as the State of Missouri, and the 'Sweetheart County' was organized on February 14, 1845 and called, "Oregon." Some years later the county seat was organized in the very center and named, "Alton." The 1860's left it's mark on this territory with the War of Rebellion, better known as the Civil War. Today those scars are mostly covered with progress, but the history remains. The original courthouse was burned by Union Troops in 1863, rebuilt in 1871 for a cost of $5,795, a third floor was added in 1903 then the entire building was demolished and replaced by the current structure in 1939.
In 1882, a hack line (horse drawn mail wagon) ran from Alton to Thayer (originally called Augusta) until the Postal Service put into operation a three seat International, the county's first automobile in 1915. In 1884, the first public road was built between Alton and Thayer. Prosperity from the timber industry brought the railroad through Oregon County during 1880-1890. In 1899, Carol Rice was hanged for murdering his wife. The log jailhouse was the scene of many escapes from 1872 until it burned in 1890, probably by a friend of barley corn brew that didn't want to spend a cold winter's night there. An attempted bank robbery at the Bank of Alton was foiled in 1913. The year of 1906 saw the outlawing of public saloons, and so was born the moonshine business in the hills and hollers.
