When Styrene is polymerized with Acrylonitrile and 1,3-butadiene, it forms Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS). ABS is used in lots of materials, including Lego bricks.
3D Printing of ABS products (like these Legos) can release substantial amounts of styrene.
Styrene is metabolized into Styrene oxide in the body, which can lead to DNA damage and cancer
While some specially marked polystyrene can be microwaved (polystyrene #6) most styrofoam will leech dangerous styrene into your food at high temps.
DO NOT MICROWAVE YOUR CUP OF NOODLES!
Almost all spools of filament can be purchased online for a modest cost. Each filament has unique properties in tensile strength, resistance to oxidation and water, and melting temperature that make each useful for different applications.
Minecraft is built upon the notion of endlessly connected chains of monomer blocks. Use those monomers to build a large polymers and extensive structures in the Minecraft Level-up LA district competition.
Minecraft Level-up LA "School of the Future" submission (20 points): Follow the requirements to create a video submission of your "School of the Future". Full details here.
5 points: Create a script of your video. The script should include address directly the following:
(1) Select a UN Sustainable Development Goal to highlight in your script
(2) Use literacy skills to plan and narrate your story, write a short script, and clearly explain your choices.
(3) Use numeracy skills to describe how you measured, counted, or designed for efficiency (space, energy, or materials).
(4) Use social-emotional learning (SEL) skills to work as a team—listening, encouraging, and solving problems together.
(5) At least 1 page in length.
5 points - Create your Minecraft "School of the Future" using a build plate supplied by LAUSD. Show evidence of your involvement with the Minecraft world hosting your "School of the Future" with picture of video evidence.
10 points - Record your video submission. Discuss the UN Sustainable Development Goal you emphasized, how you achieved your goal of modifying or creating the "School of the Future", as well as a tour of your Minecraft world. 20 seconds = 1 point, 3 minutes = max points
(1) Find or create a 3D printable stratified layer object file (STL) and upload the STL file to your site.
(2) Upload the file to the Sylmar CHS Ultimaker 3D printer PC and take an evidence screenshot of your open file in some 3D printing software
(3) Splice the model in the 3D printing software with supports and and evidence of mass (g) of the final product + time to complete
(4) Splice the model in the 3D printing software without supports and and evidence of mass (g) of the final product + time to complete
(5) Submit a request to print on Smith's form below. Evidence of a print (picture with your print) is strongly suggested. Make the 3D print for a teacher and double dip on credit from Oxytocin!
Search for your desired 3D print on Thingiverse (or an equivalent database)
Here, we selected a "Roctopus" 3D print from Thingiverse. Click the "DOWNLOAD ALL FILES" button in the top right.
A list of downloadable .STL files should pop up at the bottom of the page. Select the proper .STL file and download it.
Upload the file to your Drive. Share the .STL file and link it on your site somewhere visible.
Go to the Room 65 3D printer PC (the one closest to the 3D printer). Open the Ultimaker Cura software from the desktop.
When the Ultimaker Cura software opens, open your STL file by clicking the button in the top left.
Take notice of the print settings that are available for your 3D print, including the resolution (defaults at 0.1 mm), infill, support material, and adhesion plate. For full points, you must splice your model twice, with 50% and 100% infills.
Click the "Splice" button and allow the software to make the proper splices/supports in the model. The print time and print mass should be displayed. Take a screenshot of these values (time and mass) as evidence of you using the software.
Edit the 3D Print Sheet here. Make a copy of the "Smith (P1)" tab and name it/protect the tab as your own. Modify the data to fit with your own 3D print.
