Coaching Journey of Brian Wroten
I began my coaching career a decade ago as the Defensive Coordinator for the Portsmouth Warriors Semi-Professional Football Team. During my first three seasons, I was fortunate to lead the team to both Division and Conference Championships each year. My tenure with the Warriors culminated in the 2015-2016 season at the Tangerine Bowl, the National Football Events (NFE) AA Semi-Pro National Championship game in Daytona, Florida, where the Portsmouth Warriors finished as the 2015-2016 Semi-Pro AA National Champions.
In the following season, I transitioned to the role of Defensive Coordinator for the West Portsmouth Tanks Semi-Professional Football Team. Over the course of three seasons, we secured three Division Championships and two Conference Championships. I was honored to be named the 2017 BCFL “Coach of the Year.”
During this time, I also took on the role of Head Football Coach for the West Portsmouth Youth Football League in West Portsmouth, Ohio. In addition, I served as President of the West Portsmouth Youth Football Organization. It was during this period that I realized my purpose was shifting toward coaching, teaching, and mentoring young people through the game of football. The positive influence of coaches on my own life inspired me to pursue a career where I could make a lasting difference. I committed myself to becoming a better educator and leader, determined to help shape the next generation.
I then spent three seasons as the Defensive Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach for Portsmouth West Middle School, gaining invaluable experience coaching, teaching, and mentoring children and adolescents in grades 4 through 8.
Currently, I serve as an Assistant Football Coach at Portsmouth West High School, where I coach varsity defensive backs and serve as the junior varsity defensive coordinator. I earned my Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Social Science from Shawnee State University in 2022 and completed my Master of Education (M.Ed.) with a concentration in Athletic Coaching at the University of Mount Union in 2024. I am currently pursuing a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Sports Leadership at Concordia University – Chicago. Additionally, in 2024, I completed the Intensive Pedagogical Training Institute (IPTI) at Ohio State University and earned my Ohio Alternative Teaching License with an endorsement in Physical Education. I plan to pursue further endorsements in the near future.
In 2024, I also earned certification in the Official Air Raid Offensive Coaching Program, taught by former University of Kentucky Head Football Coach Hal Mumme.
My professional goals include becoming an impactful teacher and leader, earning the opportunity to serve as a coordinator at the varsity high school level, and, if the right opportunity arises, leading a high school program as a head varsity football coach.
Outside of my professional life, I am a proud father to three wonderful children—Luke, Bo, and Layla—and a devoted husband to my beautiful wife, Amy. Our family is completed by our English Bulldog, "Tank." In my free time, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, traveling, attending concerts, following Ohio State Football and the Cleveland Browns, and playing guitar.
