Some of My Own Brettle Family History

You will see from the title  page that there has been a change from Brettell to Brettle: this is because of my personal interest in the Brettles but with the family line composed of both Brettles and Brettells (with the odd Brettel).  You will find information on the reasons for the name variation here.  It is only partial, just containing some of the history of this line and it has less information on my maternal family or the many ancestors who do not have the Brettell or Brettle surname.   

I have followed the convention of limiting the period covered to omit data from less than 100 years ago unless the individual is known to be deceased.  I do this to avoid giving information on living descendants who may not wish to have personal information published.

The descendent chart starts with Roger Brettell - b1472: the reference numbers following a name  are given to match chart entries with later pages of particularly significant family members labelled in red.  I am less certain about the correctness of information on ancestors earlier than Benjamin Brettell - 383 as going further back one reaches a stage where the easily available records become more sparse and less clear.

Family trees can be large and unwieldy so I have presented the information in three different formats:  as a pdf  chart, a family tree hosted in Geneanet and as a family tree hosted on Family Search.  The pdf chart has the advantages that it is within this website and cannot be altered and has reference and identification of Brettles of particular interest (labelled in red) where I provide further information; it has the disadvantage that it is in the form of a 21 pages long "string" which is can be difficult to navigate.  Geneanet is a commercial genealogy which will host your family tree for free public viewing and is much easier to navigate with its professional layout and navigation.  Family Search  has already been explained in  Researching Family History  but an important point here is that it hosts a single "One World Family Tree" that you simply make additions to.  Again it has professional layout and navigation but other contributors may make additions and changes so that you do not "own" any part of the tree; to that extent I cannot just call it "my" family tree.  It has the advantage for a viewer however that it allows you to wander around past the "boundaries" of the Brettle tree.
