Some of My Brettle and Brettell Family History

Some of My Brettle Family History

This page contains some information on just one particular branch of the Brettle family; the reason for including it is that it gives a more detailed look at the conditions the "Black Country working class Brettles" lived under in the late 18th and 19th centuries; the history given here is only partial and just contains some of the history of this line i.e. it does not have any maternal family or the many aunts, uncles and cousins who do not have the Brettle surname.  You will of course find that this section also contains Brettell names as the name seems to have been used interchangeably down the generations for reasons discussed in the page on Brettle Name Origin

I have followed the convention used in making public the official records of individuals by limiting the period covered to omit data from less than 100 years ago unless the individual is known to be deceased.  I do this to avoid giving information on living descendants who may not wish to have personal information published in what is intended to be more of a general view of the origin of the name and its history rather than a personal family history.

The adjacent chart starts with John Brettell - 1043: the reference numbers following a name  are given to match chart entries with later pages with particularly significant family members labelled in red.  I am less certain about the correctness of information on ancestors earlier than Benjamin Brettell - 383 as going further back one reaches a stage where the easily available records become more sparse and often unclear.

The abbreviations used are B: for birth date, D: for date of death and sp: for spouse.  You can navigate through the chart using the vertical scroll bar on the right of the chart.
