Leading Professional Learning for Student Outcomes
Teacher Professional Development Connected to Student Outcomes
While a Principal in Melrose, our district was highlighted through a case study conducted by the American Institute for Research for publication with MA DESE that spotlighted purposeful planning for high-quality professional development. My contributions are throughout this document from MA DESE.
Enhancing Professional Development
Excerpt from case study:
Principal Conway agreed:
Every piece of professional development that we’re going to do this year is mapped out in that school improvement plan. And it ties back to the data. If you grab an elementary teacher’s professional practice goals and student learning goals, they’re almost word-for-word already in a school improvement plan. And then the action steps that they’re taking to meet those goals are the actions in the school improvement plan.
Options for Engaging Staff in PD With Pentucket
Using the UDL (Universal Design for Learning) framework, which we want teachers to use with students, we have built out various options for professional development that go beyond traditional in-person sessions. We provide staff with platforms and opportunities to engage in purposeful and aligned PD in a way that best suits their individual professional learning needs.

Cohort Model - Three District Partnership
In 2020, I organized a partnership with Newburyport and Triton school districts to run a local three district cohort leadership C.A.G.S. program with Salem State University to help develop our own leaders from within our teaching staff. I have been mentoring five staff as they complete their programs and seek licensure in administration. This has saved our staff money on tuition, and they did not need to travel. It also provided us with a leadership pipeline and an opportunity to coach and support future leaders.
Professional Growth With In-house Expertise Combined With Outside Providers and Partner Organizations
In Pentucket, we recognize that professional growth comes from learning with your own colleagues and learning from those in other organizations with expertise in different fields and career experiences. Annually, our professional development plan offers opportunities for staff outside of the school day and during the summer while also using our full days and early release days for purposeful and high-leverage professional learning. This is an example of a summer PD catalog with options for staff outside of the school day.
In my four years at Pentucket, we have received over $300,000 in competitive grants for Professional Development, which I wrote and managed, targeting professional learning. This has allowed us to implement intensive PD focused on Early Literacy Skills, Math Instruction, Social & Emotional Learning, Financial Literacy, and Instructing English Language Learners, among other topics.
Educator Evaluation: A Growth Process
Working from MA DESE models, I successfully negotiated and implemented a modernized and meaningful Educator Evaluation System for the Pentucket Regional Schools. To be successful it has taken professional development and ongoing collaboration for administrators and educators. I developed a website for clear communication and to help guide staff through the process, with easy access to all available resources.
