'Irish Ceili Band' by Ivan Sutton (b. 1944)
The word "ceili(dh)" (kay-lee) descends from the Gaelic word for ‘gathering’ or ‘party’. It usually involves music and often dancing. There was debate within the Brennan’s Parlor community as to whether it is properly spelled "ceili" or "ceilidh". We compromised. After greeting and filling glasses the music starts at 6:15 with "If you're Irish Come into the Parlor" and ends at 8:15 with "The Parting Glass". Loads of fun get packed between. All are welcome!
The local “Brennan’s Parlor" experience began in 1886 when Thomas Brennan married Hannah Nolan, the daughter of Daniel Nolan a native of Co. Roscommon, Ireland. Daniel was a partner in the 26 Mile House, a hotel, tavern and way-station located near where 26 Mile Road joins Sonora Road twenty-six miles along the way from the port of Stockton to the gold fields. Thomas and Hannah raised twelve children, many of whom stayed near and developed deep roots raising their families in the Oakdale area. Family get-togethers remain large and lively with stories and songs in good Irish fashion. We honor that tradition in our monthly ceili(dh) at the H bar B Saloon. The H-B is owned and operated by descendants of Thomas and Hannah
