Graduate education
I completed my doctoral degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Philosophy (1984), having obtained a masters degree in East Asian Studies at the University of Michigan (1975) and a masters degree in Sanskrit and Indian Studies at the University of Toronto (1979). During my graduate studies, I studied Mandarin and Classical Chinese in Taipei, Taiwan (1973-1974) and Classical Sanskrit at Pune University's Centre for Advanced Study in Sanskrit (1977-1978).
Positions
I have taught philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1984), the University of Alberta (1984-1985) and the University of Toronto (1988-1991) and have been teaching Semantics and occasionally Indian Philosophy at McGill University since 1991. I have also been a visitor at Ryokoku University in Kyoto, Japan (2006), at Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, India (2014), twice at National Zhengzhi University in Taipei, Taiwan (2015, 2018), and at Tsukuba University, in Tsukuba, Japan (2019).
