is currently entering his 13th year teaching in the Bremerton school district. Since his arrival Bremerton ensembles have consistently been awarded Superior and Excellent ratings at the Olympic Regional Large Group Music Festivals. The Marching Band was awarded numerous honors including the Spokane Lilac Festival Gold Standard and has performed at Disney World in Orlando, FL. The Jazz band has placed in the top three bands of its division for the four of last six previous years of the Viking Jazz Festival's existence. Under his direction, soloists from the Bremerton Music Program have been invited to perform at the WIAA State Solo and Ensemble Competition where they have received superior and excellent ratings. Most recently, Mr. Karler has earned his National Board Teaching Certification and been recognized as the outstanding music educator of the 21-22 year for the Kitsap area.
Outside of the public classroom Mr. Karler has served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Puget Sound where he instructed collegiate music education students on basic brass instrument pedagogy. Mr. Karler worked with the Bremerton Symphony Association to found the Bremerton Youth Jazz Ensemble, an ensemble focused on developing jazz techniques in 5th-8th grade students across Kitsap County. Following the establishment of the BYJE, Mr. Karler directed the orchestra in the BSYO for two years. Most currently, Mr. Karler was a founding member of and serves as the Secretary on the board of directors for the Kitsap Philharmonic. Beyond his teaching responsibilities Mr. Karler has served as President of the Board of Directors of the Puget Sound Youth Wind Ensemble and as President of the Olympic Music Educators’ Association.
Outside of his current position at Bremerton High School, Mr. Karler is an active trombonist and currently performs with Brass Unlimited, a quartet of music educators that, in addition to performing professionally, hosts two Sounds of Brass Concerts a year each featuring a professional guest artist. Students from Mr. Karler’s private trombone studio have gone to state solo and ensemble competitions to receive superior ratings and have been featured soloists with the Tacoma Youth Symphony organization.
When not teaching or performing, Mr. Karler is an avid endurance athlete and has completed five Ironman 70.3 and five Ironman distance triathlons, an 11 km ultra swim, and a 100km ultra marathon. Because of his race times, Mr. Karler is recognized as a bronze level all world athlete indicating that he is in the top 10% of athletes participating in Ironman events.
