BRCA1 SAGA

Hello!

This site is intended to be a place for education about this genetic mutation, to document my journey and to share experiences in the hopes that it may also help someone else who is going through something similar or has similar surgeries. Because when you hear this news, you need to talk to someone who GETS IT and hear their story. SEARCH FOR WHAT YOU NEED!

My family has a very strong history of cancers - all types. I grew up in Buffalo, NY and much of the family was from the Lackawanna area - where Bethlehem Steel was located and many of the men worked. This was my grandparents’ generation. Most of the men subsequently died of lung cancer and the women died of ovarian and breast cancer. (Large catholic family - a dozen siblings). Moving a generation down, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 49 and died at age 55. This has launched me into a lifelong fear of getting and dying of cancer. And since I have discovered that I have the BRCA1 genetic mutation, I now know that might not need to happen thanks to genetic testing and options that it provides.
