Growing amazing beautiful flowers right here in Calgary is our passion. Spreading joy and sharing happiness is our why.
We'd love to share some flower joy with you!
Locally grown flowers last longer, smell better, and have a much smaller environmental impact than imported flowers. True, we can only grow specific blooms for our Calgary climate, but what we do grow is simply stunning!
Imagine a beautiful, hand-tied bouquet of unique flowers and the sense of joy and happiness they bring to the recipient. You can bring joy to your space or give joy to someone you care about. How happy are you when you inhale the fresh scent, direct from the garden?
Flowers make people happy!
The easiest way to order flowers is to select an option on our secure, online shop. www.bowriverblooms.com We have both pickup and fee-based delivery options available. Our bouquet options are standard and we have a minimum order. However, you can "upsize" any bouquet just by sending us a quick note by email and we will take care of the order for you at bowriverblooms@gmail.com. Keep in mind we are a seasonal flower market and are closed for fresh flower sales from November until February when our Tulips are ready.
This just means you will receive your flowers regularly. One per week or once per month, or however we set up the subscription. We can even set up once a year so you'll never miss a special day (like Mom's birthday) or an anniversary again!
Of course, you can order flowers whenever you want them, provided they are in season. Remember we do not use imported flowers, only those we grow ourselves. The best reason to order your flowers by collection (or by subscription) is that you are guaranteed to have your flowers each week. When you order a collection, you are guaranteed flowers for each week for the duration. For some weeks throughout the season, we do have spare flowers which are made available on Saturdays during the open market but they are never guaranteed and cannot be reserved.
Each flower collection (or subscription) has a specific time frame which is described in the shop. They are all seasonal, during Spring, Summer or Fall. If you would like to have a full year of flowers then simply order one of each. All communication will be by email so make sure your email address is correct during checkout. We aim to meet the anticipated date but of course, we have to let Mother Nature be in charge. Sometimes we might be delayed or ahead of schedule by a week or two.
You can make one change to your regular schedule throughout your subscription. For example, if you order a Summer subscription, but you will be away on vacation during one of the weeks, let us know the week before and we will cancel that week's order and extend the subscription by one week.
If you are away from home during your delivery day but will be back soon, just leave a pickle jar, small bucket, or other container of water at your door and we'll leave your flowers there for you. You don't need to be home to receive your bouquet!
Flowers will be held for 24 hours from your regular pickup window. Any flowers left after that time will be forfeited and then donated to 1 of the 3 nearby senior's homes. We do this to ensure you receive the freshest possible flowers.
Every bouquet arrives with a special Bow River Blooms care card with tips to get the most out of your flowers. Because our flowers are freshly cut to order we don't need to use flower food packets so you won't find those tucked into your flowers.
Our hand-tied flower bouquets arrive wrapped in our signature paper and twine and are ready to be placed into your vessel of choice. We do have a beautiful, Bow River Blooms exclusive vase available**, which can be added to your first bouquet, but it is not included in your subscription.
**Our vases are currently sold out. Our new shipment will be arriving in time for Valentine/Galentine's day delivery
Please visit our online store to see all that we offer: www.bowriverblooms.com Keep in mind we are a seasonal flower market and are closed for fresh flower sales from November until February when our Tulips are ready.

Fall is here! The dreaded F-word. The morning air feels different. It happens overnight it seems. The growing season in Calgary is so short, about 110 days is all we’ve got to nurture and share our beautiful flowers with you.
The newest flower to come into season is the Dahlia—the Diva of the garden. These babies were started inside in early March to try and get a jumpstart on blooms. They were planted outside in May. Unfortunately, June had severe water restrictions in Calgary, and they had to be watered with a watering can. No hose or tap watering was permitted. The Dahlia’s progress slowed significantly without enough water. July’s heatwave then brought a crazy aphid and thrips infestation. Needless to say, the jumpstart didn’t happen! I wasn’t even sure we would have flowers before frost (which can come as early as Sept 15). It has been a challenging summer, to say the least. However, after all the summer challenges, I’m so happy to announce we finally have enough blooms to offer a Dahlia bouquet subscription.
Order your 4 week, stunning, Dahlia bouquet subscription here.
In other news… I am planning our first fall Bloom Bar and workshop. Bring your sister, your mom, or your bestie (even better, bring all 3) and join me on October 10th to craft your own Thanksgiving centerpiece. The final pieces are coming together, and tickets and details will be available here.
How to Grow & Care for Dahlias
Enjoy this late-summer beauty in your garden and grow showstopping dahlias!
Planting:
When: Plant tubers after the last frost (typically late May in Calgary).
Where: Choose a sunny spot with at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.
Soil: Well-draining soil is key. Add compost for extra nutrients.
Spacing: Space plants about 12–18" apart, depending on variety size.
Depth: Plant the tuber horizontally with the “eye” facing up, about 4–6" deep.
Growing Tips:
Watering: Water deeply after sprouting. Keep soil moist but not soggy.
Staking: Tall varieties benefit from staking early to prevent flopping.
Feeding: Fertilize monthly with a low-nitrogen fertilizer once plants are growing well.
Pinching: Once the plant is about 12" tall, pinch out the top growing tip for bushier plants and more blooms.
Bloom Time:
Dahlias bloom mid-summer until fall frost. The more you cut, the more they bloom!
End of Season:
After a killing frost, cut back stems and dig up tubers if you want to save them. Let them dry, then store in a cool, dark, frost-free place until spring. Dahlias are annuals in Calgary, meaning they will not come back next year if you leave them out.
