Despite losing their final group game (which was ultimately inconsequential as they still finished top) 1-0 to Cameroon with a fully rotated starting 11, this Brazilian squad is stacked with quality across the board.

After the international retirement of Pel and other stars from the 1970 squad, Brazil was not able to overcome the Netherlands at the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, and finished in fourth place after losing the third place game to Poland.[51]

The Brazil national team is known by different names in various parts of the world. Nicknames for the squad in Brazil include: Canarinho, meaning 'Little Canary', a reference to a species of bird commonly found in Brazil that has a vivid yellow color, this phrase was popularized by the late cartoonist Fernando "Mangabeira" Pieruccetti during the 1950 World Cup despite the team not wearing the color yet back then;[142] Amarelinha (Little Yellow One), Seleo (The National Squad), Verde-amarela (The Green and Yellow), Pentacampeo (Five-time Champions),[143] and Esquadro de Ouro (The Golden Squad). Some Latin American commentators often refer to the Brazil team as El Scratch (The Scratch), among others.[144]

The South American giants went into the 2022 tournament as the top-ranked team in the world and many of the names on the list of coach Tite are household names, playing for some of the biggest club teams in the world.

In the end, regardless of whether it was form or fitness, there was no place for the former Liverpool and Barcelona man, but Tite is clearly confident that he has enough talent in his squad to go all the way, as Brazil seek to extend their record as the nation with the most World Cup wins with five.

The five-time winners have incredible depth at their disposal this time around, with arguably the best squad heading to this World Cup. If their veteran manager Tite can continue to eke the best out of Neymar, and avoid any in-fighting, they could make it six.

Tite has signed off his 26-man squad for the World Cup at the CBF headquarters in Rio. The 61-year-old claimed to be sure of 20 players but needed the September internationals and a couple of scouting trips to England and Italy over the past fortnight to help make his mind up on the rest.

First blaugrana confirmed for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. On Monday the Brazil squad was named for the tournament which starts on 20 November and Bara winger Raphinha was one of the 26 players included.

Selecao coach Tite named his 26-man squad for the Qatar tournament on Monday evening, which also included Tottenham's Richarlison and Manchester United's Antony, but Firmino was the most noticeable absentee with Martinelli, who only has three caps for his country, preferred.

Jesus, like his Arsenal team-mate, had not featured in a Brazil squad since the summer but has been recalled to Tite's World Cup selection, which consists of a near all-Premier League midfield with Manchester United duo Casemiro and Fred called up alongside Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes, Fabinho of Liverpool and West Ham's Lucas Paqueta.

Firmino is one of four players called up to Brazil's penultimate squad for the World Cup in September to not be selected for Qatar, the others being Nottingham Forest full-back Renan Lodi, Roma defender Roban Ibanez and Atletico Madrid's Matheus Cunha.

"None of them [Arsenal trio Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli] were in the last squad. With Gabriel Magalhaes, he was in the squad for a while without playing and I think it became clear that the coach didn't trust him, or didn't trust him enough, so his exclusion is not a surprise.

"A month or so ago, I don't think Martinelli was in the squad, but he has forced his way in through sheer week-after-week excellence for Arsenal. It has been a very difficult decision. How are you going to get him in? There were two ways.

"It's not a surprise Richarlison is in the squad. He's scored seven goals in his last six games for Brazil - he is their penalty area finisher. They have got plenty of players to build up the play; they need someone to finish in the penalty area and he has been the man.

Ranked eighth in the world, Brazil's national women's team has long been underfunded and undermined. Despite the disadvantages, Marta, now 37, has racked up nearly every other prize in professional soccer. She has two Olympic silver medals; she's been named FIFA's World Player of the Year six times and is one of the top-paid women's soccer stars in the world.

Long before she came to the U.S. to play, she shook up the game with her brilliance like no other female player before, said Mike Woitalla, executive editor of Soccer America magazine. "She brought the Brazilian flair that set the standard for world soccer to the women's game. Her Brazilian teams were a wake-up call to the U.S. that its athleticism would no longer suffice to continue as the world power, inspiring a greater emphasis on individual skill and creativity," he said.

Fast forward to this year's World Cup, and progress can be seen in Brazil. This year's women's national team is younger, many play abroad and 11 of the 23-player squad have never been to the World Cup.

They also have a female world-class coach, Pia Sundhage, who led the U.S. to two Olympic gold medal wins. "Marta is the queen, Marta is the icon and just to be around her is contagious," Sundhage said at a press conference late last month announcing this year's Brazilian team. But Sundhage wouldn't commit to starting Marta. "Brazil is not only one player," she stressed. "It is a team," she said, especially since there are so many young players this year.

Brazil coach Pia Sundhage announced her squad on Tuesday for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand. The 37-year-old Marta has won the world player of the year award six times but has never won the trophy in five previous attempts with Brazil. This will likely be her last World Cup.

Brazil will play a last friendly game at home on Sunday against Chile in Brasilia. Then the Brazilian squad will head to Australia aiming to go one better than its best-ever finish in eight World Cup appearances: runner-up to Germany in 2007.

What stands out the most from his selection is that there are nine forwards in the squad, namely Neymar, Vinicius, Richarlison, Raphinha, Gabriel Jesus, Rodrygo, Antony, Gabriel Martinelli and Pedro.

Head coach Pia Sundhage is set to name the final 23-member squad for the 2023 Women's World Cup on June 27. The squad will be updated once it is officially announced, but who is likely to make the cut? GOAL takes a look.

The squad announcement was a high-profile event in Brazil, with television stations juggling their programing to broadcast it live. More than 700 journalists, many from abroad, were accredited for the event at a traditional concert house in Rio de Janeiro.

Talent, though, is something he does not lack -- as he made clear during the Confederations Cup. In June and July, he performed the functions that Scolari was looking for in his centre forward. He offered a reference in the penalty area, tying up the opposing centre backs and easing the task for the likes of Neymar running in behind him. He showed the mobility to move out to the flanks and the technique to combine with the attacking midfielders. And he scored goals. Scolari, always a fan of the traditional No. 9, liked what he saw. Fred was another one who had booked his place in the World Cup squad.

England, which is gunning for its second World Cup title, has the most valuable squad in Qatar with Jude Bellingham topping a list of over 800 players, a study has found. Here is a look at how the other major sides compare at the tournament:

According to a study conducted by Swiss research group CIES Football Observatory, England's 26-man squad is worth just under $1.54 billion in transfer value, with 19-year-old Bellingham valued at $210 million.

Meanwhile it is a maiden World Cup for Martinelli, who won the first of his three caps against Chile back in March but does have an Olympic gold medal to his name as part of the successful squad in 2020.

However, Scolari chose to ignore the public outcry from Brazilian fans, media pundits and Brazilian legend Pele to include Romario in the national team, saying his inclusion would cause unrest within the squad.

Scolari believes Romario faked an injury in order to miss last year's Copa America (South American championship) tournament in Colombia and because of that, he didn't want to reward him with a selection to the World Cup squad.

Firmino has fallen victim to the array of attacking talent at his country's disposal, with Antony, Gabriel Jesus, Martinelli, Neymar, Pedro, Raphinha, Richarlison, Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr all making it in the squad.

Another former Dortmund man, Ginter was a Freiburg player when he was called into Joachim Lw's finals squad. At 20, the centre-back was the youngest player in Germany's set-up but didn't make an appearance at the tournament. Four days after the final, he signed for BVB before switching Borussias to Mnchengladbach three years later. After five years and more than 150 appearances, he returned home to Freiburg in summer 2022, bringing his experience of 46 senior international caps, including the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. e24fc04721
