Citing Books

Regular print or trade books

These are organized in a way where you could read it from cover to cover.

They generally have an author (or more than one) who is responsible for the entire contents

Reference books

These are intended to be used to look up something specific - not to be read cover to cover

The publishing company puts an editor (or more than one) in charge of the contents. The editor(s) assign authors to certain sections. A lot of people have to get paid.

Coverage can be so extensive that the information in divided into several different books or volumes.

As information evolves, the reference book is reprinted and updated in new editions.
