Brunswick County Schools Pre-K Exceptional Children department provides screening for children ages 3-5 years. Should a child show concerns in any of the following areas: cognition, speech-language, motor skills (fine or gross motor), adaptive behavior, or social/emotional functioning in the screening an evaluation can be conducted to determine if the child requires specially designed Exceptional Children's services in order to learn. Early intervention is the best support you can provide your child to help them reach their individual potential and make progress.
READ, READ, READ!! Reading to your child is very important! It helps provide them with vocabulary and knowledge, even as young children.
Limit screen time. Children from the ages of 2-5 years should have no more than 60 minutes per day. A screen is a TV, a phone, an iPad or tablet, a computer, a game console, or any other device or toy that has a screen (http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/early/2016/10/19/peds.2016-2591 http://www.commonsensemedia.org/screen-time/how-much-screen-time-is-ok-for-my-kids)
PLAY, PLAY, PLAY with your children! Pretend and be silly. Have fun! Children learn best through play.
Provide opportunities for your child/children to play with other children their age. Socialization is very important and another way children learn.
Include your children in your daily activities such as cooking and daily chores. Let them help using age-appropriate strategies. Talk to them as you cook or work so they understand what you are doing and why.
