How to ‘Target Train’ your dog so he/she keeps their attention on you.
Walking your dog in a figure-8 pattern on an incline that has good footing is a great core strengthening exercise as well as an ideal warm-up activity. Use a short leash to maintain control of your dog at all times (harnesses are preferred over collars). Walk your dog in a large (at least 20 feet) figure-8 pattern. Do this outside, when the wind is not too strong.
Keep your dog's head up and looking at you throughout the exercise. Exhale as you start to incline. As you walk, think about how you are walking your dog. Is your dog moving all four feet? Two hind legs? One hind leg? Keep your dog on the straight-ahead path. Keep your dog walking on the same path when the wind is right. Walk too straight and the dog will get carried away. Let the dog naturally try to straighten out the incline.
Your dog should not wander off the path during the exercise, and should not get ahead of you.
To warm-up for the figure-8 exercise, have your dog run one-third of the way down the incline and then pull the lead. Then have the dog run the other third of the way down the incline and let the dog pull the lead. As the dog moves down the incline, praise it and hold the lead.
As you start to walk the dog in a figure-8 pattern, start to walk your dog with the lead. Walk your dog in a figure-8 pattern when the wind is right (when the dog is walking on the straight-ahead path). Your dog should walk with the lead on the path so it does not wander off the path. Keep your dog walking on the path and your dog should only wander off the path if you pull the lead. To stop the dog wandering off the path, hold the lead while you walk the dog towards you. If you let the lead go, the dog will wander off the path. If you stop the dog wandering off the path, then the dog has been allowed to run away. Remember to praise the dog when it is walking on the path and you stop the dog wandering on the path.
