The player plays as an unnamed character, who has young children quiz the player trivia questions in multiple categories; such as English, Science, Mathematics, history, geography and a mixed mode, where all categories are combined into one quiz.

There are multiple formats of question that the player has to answer in. The player is given Multiple choice questions, sorting questions and dot connection question. Parents need to know that this Nintendo DS game incorporates 6000 of the Brain Quest grade-specific questions within its learning games. Parents looking for games with educational content for kids will be excited to discover this Nintendo DS game. It has good single player modes as well as multiplayer modes for both cooperative and competitive play using just one DS. It does a good job of representing culturally diverse characters within its games.

Brain Quest flashcards and workbooks just got a techie facelift. BRAIN QUEST: GRADES 5& 6, a game for the Nintendo DS, incorporates 6000 questions typically found in fifth and sixth grade curriculum into video game playing. These questions appear in three different modes: Quest, Brain, and Multiplayer and cover the following academic subjects: math, science, English, geography, history, and a catch-all category called \"Grab Bag.\" In each of the modes, kids play to earn points and accolades. The points can be traded in for stickers to use in an art designing area. There is also a robust Sudoku Mode offering 4 x 4, 6 x 6, and 9 x 9 Sudoku Puzzles.

In the Quest Mode, which provides a light story to help motivate kids to tackle the questions, you become a contestant in the Quest Extreme Games festival. Each Extreme Game represents an academic subject. For example, to compete in a soccer match, you will do math challenges. With the Brain Mode, you jump right in and start answering questions delivered in rounds of 5 questions each. And in the Multiplayer Modes, you can play cooperatively or competitively with a friend using just one Nintendo DS and one game cartridge.

Brain Quest delivers on its slogan "It's Fun to Be Smart" with a snappy presentation of academic questions in a video game format. While this isn't a traditional video game with cutting edge gameplay and deep storytelling, it does a great job of making learning fun by mixing up the format of the questions. You'll find multiple choice, select an image, matching, sorting, fill-in-the-blank, word builder (add a letter to the beginning of a word to change into another word), and crossout (cross out a letter in a misspelled word) questions. Accompanying you while you answer these questions with your the DS stylus, is uplifting funky music. Plus the game is always telling you how good you are when you answer questions correctly. This game is so supportive that even reluctant learners will want to play.

Brain Quest first caught my attention years ago with their decks of question cards that could be used for educationally-oriented trivia games. They still publish these decks in updated formats, and they also publish two series of supplemental workbooks, one series for the regular school year and another for summer.

The number of type of questions varies from deck to deck. There are age or grade level decks for toddlers up through seventh grade. Grade level decks include questions from math, language arts, science, history, geography, civics, and miscellaneous topics. Many of the questions reflect content aligned with what students are learning at each grade level, so they are intended to reinforce the core curriculum.

Brain Quest workbooks for pre-kindergarten through grade six are each designed to closely reflect educational standards for each level. As with the decks, the workbooks concentrate on early-learning skills in preschool and kindergarten, then advance into core skills for math, reading, and writing. While those subjects receive the most attention, there are also pages for science and social studies. While coverage of all topics is necessarily selective, there are more than 300 pages per book.

As a bonus, at the back of each book are a few pages with a Brain Quest mini-deck. These pages have smaller versions of the decks of cards with questions and answers. They can be cut out and used as you would the regular decks.

Summer Brain Quest books are scaled-down versions of the regular workbooks that are designed to keep academic skills sharp over the summer months. With 160 pages, each book is identified with two grade levels from their Pre-K & K book through 5 & 6. Books are intended to be used during the summer between those two grade levels. Thus, for example, the book 2 & 3 should be used after second grade, and the book 3 & 4 should be used after third grade.

This recent addition to the Brain Quest sets of problem cards consists of 1000 problems covering numeration; fractions and geometry; addition; subtraction; measurement; supercomputations, which combine operations to solve two- and three-digit problems; and problem solving. An additional "Fun with Numbers" section presents number riddles. The cards are in an easy-to-use format with seven different types of questions on one page and answers on the next.

I asked a second-grade teacher to test the cards in the classroom and had difficulty getting them back for the review because she liked them so much. She uses them every day during her mathematics warmup. She likes the cards for several reasons: (a) each card covers different skills; (b) many of the problems involve two-step problem solving; (c) when used daily, the cards offer a cumulative review in all areas; and (d) the cards cover skills that are aligned with the regular curriculum. This teacher also commented that she thought the cards were more challenging for her students than her adopted mathematics textbook is. We did find one error on the cards. The first problem on card 18 of deck I has a mistake in the problem presentation. 006ab0faaa
