The Brain Lab is an inter-university virtual laboratory that focuses on simplifying interactions between humans and machines, specifically humanoid robots, by analyzing the massive amount of data collected during the interaction. The laboratory's objective is to design new architectures and methodologies to improve the "perception-understanding-action" cycle of robotic systems, drawing inspiration from human cognitive models. The laboratory's focus is mostly on artificial creativity algorithms, which allow for robot behavior that is not necessarily evident and deterministic.
Furthermore, the laboratory works on brain models for motor control, sensorimotor coordination, and cognition in autonomous robots to help robots be aware of themselves and their surroundings. Other goals of the laboratory include improving the system's social interaction via language processing and textual content analysis, as well as researching the function of robots in cognitive and social sciences. The laboratory is also active in a variety of educational initiatives and interactions with the local community, and its investigations aim to integrate robots, the internet, cloud, mobile, and electronic technologies for the development of new solutions applicable to all sectors.
The event consists of an intensive training course on the programming of a robotic arm from the COMAU company. After a first part of theoretical training, the students are divided into work teams and compete in a challenge.
It is a new format that seems to work well by stimulating collaboration and competitiveness at the same time.
