The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the impact of social media on us in our day-to-day lives. The goal is to figure out exactly how consumed we are by it, and how that compares to other people. I plan to better form my opinion on social media as a whole by the end of my research.
Through this project, I have learned a good deal about social media. I've learned about it's addictive nature, but I've also learned about it's informative capabilities. Through my research I have realized that social media isn't to be blamed for all these negative things happening in society, the real culprit is society's severe dopamine addiction.
My results came back as "fairly reliant," which is about what I'd expected for myself. I'm not on social media constantly, but it is something I use often when I'm bored. I'm sure there are things that I could do to cut down a little bit more, but I am much better than I used to be at controlling myself.
The statistic I found on Pew says that over 50% of adults look to social media for news. This shows that the world is evolving to use social media for more than just connecting with your friends, it can also be a way to inform people. The concern in this is that social media isn't always reliable because anyone can post anything they want, leaving room for false information.
Pew Research Center. (2024, September 17). Social Media and News Fact sheet. Pew Research Center. https://www.pewresearch.org/journalism/fact-sheet/social-media-and-news-fact-sheet/I have mixed feelings about social media, It has its positive and negative uses due to its open nature. The ability for everyone to post makes it cool because you can talk with anyone, but that can also make it easy to fall victim to harassment and phishing because anyone can reach out to you. I believe social media is what you make it, if you make it the dopamine-eating, time-wasting, mental health destroyer, then that's what it will become, but if you choose to use social media as a tool to connect with friends, network, and inform yourself, then it's one of the greatest inventions humanity has ever seen. Social media's impact is highly dependent on your character and your self-discipline, if both of those things are in check, then you'll have no issues.Â
