Welcome to the Task Force on Design BPS-Connected Inverter-Based Resource (IBR) Models for Grid Planning within the Bulk Power System Planning Subcommittee at IEEE Power&Energy Sociery.
The goal of the proposed task force is to design a set of BPS-connected IBR models for grid planning. Those models are efficient for computation. They can be input/output frequency-domain admittance models, or white-box models with structures known and parameters learned from experiment data. With those models, abnormal behavior of IBRs is expected to be detected at the planning stage before IBRs are put into operation.
This task force will provide a platform for people with different backgrounds to contribute to IBR planning. Grid planners, modeling experts, power electronics experts, and control experts will work together to achieve the following two outcomes:
Develop fundamental understanding on various possible IBR dynamics due to IBR and grid interactions.
Develop a set of tools to facilitate IBR planning model development and develop tutorials on how to use those tools.

Year 1 (2023):
Hold a kickoff TF meeting and lay out the work plan for Year 1 and disseminate the preliminary research results on IBR modeling experiences.
Draft a TF report documenting real-world IBR major events, the associated mechanism analysis of the observed dynamic phenomena of IBRs, including overvoltage, overcurrent, resonances, control interactions, etc.
Draft a TF paper to survey the current technologies on IBR model structure design (RMS based versus EMT based) and measurement-based model refinement; Develop demos on model refinement using time-domain and frequency-domain measurement data.
Develop open-source codes for demos and set up a github account for the codes.
