I know that in professional boxing it is common for promising pro boxers to get set up with what people call "tune up fights" where gyms collude to boost a particularly promising boxers record by setting them up with fights against significantly weaker boxers.

In professional boxing this makes sense because it helps them to build hype around a particularly promising boxer to help make the fighter more marketable and bring in viewers etc.. but is this an issue that exists in amateur boxing as well? Is there any reason why a gym would want to artificially boost an amateur boxer's record?

Marion, a 17-year-old senior at Proviso West High School, and other scholars from Proviso West were treated to a boxing clinic courtesy of the Marine Corps Boxing Team May 12 as part of Marine Week Chicago.

The boxers set up three stations where they provided first-hand look at the training needed for boxing. Dekinderen covered exercises with a jump rope at one station. Lance Cpl. Tommy G. Roque, 19-year-old boxer from Dunkirk, N.Y., showcased defensive techniques to the kids. He instructed them on how to slip, roll and catch punches. Lance Cpl. Bryant Tune, a 23-year-old boxer from Nathalie, Va., taught them how to properly throw a punch and combinations.

After teaching the kids a thing or two about boxing the Marines displayed their skills against each other. Dekinderen and Roque put on their protective gear and sparred for the students to leave a lasting impression.

"Been thinking about it during the time they were figuring out this fight and I feel the fans, and everyone who supports boxing, have seen these tune ups already," Garcia tweeted. "It's time that we give the fans what they want. Also, he requested the tune up, not me, so let him handle business. LET'S GO.
