If you want premium sound engineering with seamless gesture controls and a sleek, modern design for high-fidelity music listening, choose Bowers & Wilkins PX; if you need adaptive personal audio calibration with extended battery life and room-simulation technology, choose PSB Speakers M4U.
• Bowers & Wilkins PX: Offers exceptional acoustic precision with 40mm dynamic drivers and intuitive "lift to pause" sensors, but features on-ear placement that may limit comfort during long sessions. Best for the audiophile who prioritizes brand heritage and smart responsiveness.
• PSB Speakers M4U 8 MKII: Delivers unique "RoomFeel" technology to mimic speaker performance and includes Audiodo Personal Sound customization, though it relies on app-based controls rather than physical gestures. Best for the listener who wants tailored audio profiles and longer battery endurance.
• The Verdict: The PX is the choice for style and immediate interaction, while the M4U is the choice for deep customization and all-day listening power.
The Bowers & Wilkins PX is designed for the person who treats their headphones as an extension of their musical taste rather than just a tool. Its core strength lies in the drive units, which are drawn directly from the company's P9 Signature line. This means you aren't getting generic components; you are getting optimized listening performance that delivers a natural stereo perspective. The designers subtly angled these drivers to ensure the soundstage feels wide and immersive, which is crucial for anyone who listens to complex classical pieces or intricate rock arrangements where separation matters.
One of the most practical features for daily users is the intelligent sensor system. You do not need to fumble for buttons to stop your music when someone approaches you or to take a break. Simply lifting one ear cup pauses the playback instantly, and placing the headphones down triggers a power-saving sleep mode. When you pick them back up, they resume exactly where you left off. This "PX responds to you" philosophy makes it ideal for the commuter or office worker who moves frequently between environments, such as a busy street or a quiet office, without wanting to manage settings manually.

However, this product is not for everyone. The PX uses an on-ear design with a specific weight distribution that, while lightweight at 0.5 kg, might not suit those with larger head sizes or those who plan to wear headphones for eight hours straight. If you require over-ear isolation or have sensitive ears that cannot tolerate pressure on the cartilage, the fit might become uncomfortable after an hour. Additionally, while the battery life is solid at 22 hours, it is slightly less than some competitors, meaning you might need to charge it more often if you travel internationally without access to power outlets. This headphone is best for the user who values the tactile experience of smart gestures and premium build quality over maximum battery duration.
The PSB Speakers M4U 8 MKII is engineered for the listener who demands a highly personalized audio experience. Unlike standard headphones that apply a one-size-fits-all sound profile, this model integrates Audiodo's Personal Sound technology. This feature analyzes your unique hearing profile—accounting for differences between your left and right ears, age-related hearing loss, or past exposure to loud noises—and adjusts the frequency response to compensate. If you have ever felt that music sounds "flat" or that vocals are muddy despite using expensive gear, this customization capability allows you to unearth the full sonic potential of your music library.
Another defining characteristic is the RoomFeel technology. Most headphones create a sealed environment that can feel artificial, but PSB has developed target curves that recreate the experience of listening to hi-fi speakers in a room. This adds a layer of depth and spatial awareness that many wireless models lack. Combined with its planar magnetic driver type, the M4U offers precise imaging and natural musical dynamics that appeal to critical listeners. The device also boasts a robust 25-hour battery life, giving you four extra hours of playtime compared to the PX, along with a quick charge time that gets you back in action within four hours.
Despite these advantages, the PSB M4U 8 MKII requires a different approach to control. While it supports media controls and noise cancellation, it relies heavily on a companion app for the most significant features, including the Personal Sound calibration and firmware updates. If you prefer a purely physical interface without needing to pull out your phone to adjust your EQ or check battery status, this workflow might feel cumbersome. Furthermore, the polycarbonate enclosure and gyro-suspended earpads offer good durability, but the focus on technical customization means it lacks the "set and forget" simplicity of the Bowers & Wilkins. This headphone is perfect for the tech-savvy user who wants to optimize their hearing and listen to music for long durations without frequent charging.
• Best for gym workouts → PSB Speakers M4U. The 25-hour battery life ensures you won't run out of power mid-workout, and the customizable fit helps maintain stability during movement better than the lighter, gesture-focused PX.
• Best for instant interaction → Bowers & Wilkins PX. The ability to pause music by lifting an ear cup is unmatched for quick stops, making it superior for commuting or office interruptions.
• Best for sound customization → PSB Speakers M4U. The Audiodo Personal Sound integration provides a level of hearing compensation that no other competitor offers, tailoring the audio specifically to your biology.
• Best for acoustic fidelity → Bowers & Wilkins PX. The 40mm dynamic drivers from the P9 Signature lineage provide a warm, natural sound signature that many purists prefer for jazz and vocal-heavy tracks.
• Best for battery longevity → PSB Speakers M4U. With 25 hours of average life versus 22 hours, the PSB wins for travelers and heavy users who prioritize runtime.
• Best for design aesthetics → Bowers & Wilkins PX. The Space Grey finish and sleek, minimalist form factor offer a more premium, fashion-forward look compared to the functional design of the M4U.
• Best for room simulation → PSB Speakers M4U. The RoomFeel technology creates a spacious soundstage that mimics real-world speakers, whereas the PX focuses on direct, intimate delivery.
• Best for ease of use → Bowers & Wilkins PX. The intuitive sensors and simple touch controls reduce the learning curve, whereas the PSB requires app interaction for full functionality.
After analyzing the specifications and intended use cases, I would personally buy the PSB Speakers M4U 8 MKII. While the Bowers & Wilkins PX is undeniably stylish and smart, the PSB's inclusion of Audiodo Personal Sound and RoomFeel technology addresses fundamental issues with how we perceive audio. In my opinion, the ability to calibrate the headphones to your specific hearing profile is a game-changer that elevates the listening experience far beyond what standard equalization can achieve. The extra three hours of battery life also make it the more practical choice for long days, especially for gym sessions or long flights where charging isn't an option. If you want a headphone that evolves with you and adapts to your unique physiology, the PSB M4U is the superior investment.
Both models are wireless and portable, but the PSB M4U 8 MKII offers a longer 25-hour battery life and a secure fit with gyro-suspended earpads, making it slightly more reliable for extended gym sessions compared to the PX.
Yes, for the PSB M4U 8 MKII, you must use the app to enable the Personal Sound hearing compensation and RoomFeel technology. The Bowers & Wilkins PX works well out of the box but also requires an app for firmware updates to get the best performance.
Both units feature advanced active noise cancellation. The PX uses adaptive noise cancelling that adjusts to your environment like a plane or street, while the PSB utilizes industry-leading digital ANC with crystal clear mics for pure noise-free listening in various settings.
The Bowers & Wilkins PX uses 40mm dynamic drivers known for their warmth and natural presentation, whereas the PSB M4U 8 MKII employs Planar Magnetic drivers, which typically offer faster transient response and more detailed imaging.
