What is the Bowen Technique?
Bowen Technique
It is a gentle, hands-on therapy that uses subtle movements over muscles and connective tissue to communicate through the body’s layers of fascia. These signals influence the nerves, lymphatic system, organs, muscles, joints, and the nervous system, offering an innovative approach to managing both chronic and acute pain.
What can you expect during your first session?
Your initial session focuses on relaxation and education. Your Bowen Practitioner will help you notice subtle shifts in your breath and how your body responds. It’s typical to feel like the pressure is too light to make a difference—Bowenwork is intentionally gentle. The moves build on one another, gradually creating a deep sense of calm as your nervous system settles. Many clients leave their first session feeling lighter, more relaxed, and surprised by how much their body has shifted with such minimal pressure.
After your session, your body continues to process the work during an important integration period. This is when many of the changes truly take place, which is why Bowenwork sessions are typically spaced 5–10 days apart. Allowing time between appointments allows your body to adjust, unwind, and create lasting improvements.
The Bowen Technique works on a superficial level of the body, specifically the fascia. This network of connective tissue is made largely of water and collagen and is found all throughout the body. Because of this, staying well-hydrated is essential. Arriving at your session hydrated—and continuing to drink water throughout the integration period—supports the tissue’s ability to respond, release, and create the best possible results.

How does it work?
A Bowen Practitioner uses a series of gentle, precise moves that send signals through the body, encouraging it to shift into the parasympathetic nervous system—the “rest and digest” state where natural healing can occur. This subtle approach has helped many people reduce pain and discomfort, improve mobility and mental well-being, and enhance their overall quality of life.
Where does Bowen Therapy come from?
Thomas Ambrose Bowen from Geelong, Australia, developed a unique manual therapy focused on resetting muscle tension through gentle stretch-and-roll movements and intentional pauses. He taught only a handful of practitioners, including Ossie Rentsch, whom he trusted to accurately document and share his method. Rentsch organized Bowen’s techniques into a structured, teachable system known as Bowenwork® (originally Bowtech®). Today, Bowenwork is taught in more than 30 countries through the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia.
How can I book a session?
Meet Rachel
Rachel lives in Portland, Oregon. She offers Bowen Technique as part of a Chiropractic Treatment plan for folks with the Oregon Health Plan at Be Well Holistic Health.
Rachel’s path into bodywork has been shaped by both formal training and a genuine love for helping people feel more at ease in their own bodies. She studied at the Ashland Institute of Massage Therapy and the American Bowen Academy, bringing a gentle, “less-is-more” style to every session. Her focus is on helping the nervous system settle so the body can do what it naturally knows how to do—heal.
She uses the Bowen Technique to guide clients into a calmer, more relaxed state, and as a yoga instructor, she also teaches simple tools and exercises people can use at home. She specializes in helping clients manage conditions related to stress, fatigue, and sleep disorders.
When she’s not working with clients, Rachel teaches ESL at a local community college, invests in her own healing, and spends as much time as she can outside enjoying the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
