Bowdoin Cemeteries

Bowdoin has more than forty-five cemeteries, spread throughout the town, ranging from single family burial plots to relatively larger church and community cemeteries.   A few of the more prominient Bowdoin cemeteries are featured below.

When doing Family Research, findagrave.com is an excellent resource.  Some cemeteries are easily found through the search menu by using the location BOWDOIN.   But some are not found unless a search for WEST BOWDOIN and BOWDOIN CENTER is done.  Refer to the Key below.

Adams Cemetery

LOCATION:  Augusta Road, Route 201,  Bowdoin, Maine 04287

A few of the oldest gravestones in this cemetery are those of Ralph Varnam died in 1815, George Lewis, died in 1818, John B. Adams, young son 1815 - 1830; Ambrose Ridley 1803-1831, Harriet Adams, wife of Israel 1808 -1834, Edward Hopkins 1824-1834.  All died at young ages.

Coombs Cemetery (also Elliot/Eaton)

LOCATION:  Coombs Road, off of Augusta Road, Bowdoin, Maine 04287

North Bowdoin Cemetery

According to the Cemetery Inscriptions, and Revolutionary, War of 1812, and Civil War Veterans of Bowdoin, Maine by Charlene Bartlett and Jayne Bickford, this North Bowdoin Cemetery was in "a deplorable condition".

LOCATION:  986 Litchfield Road, Bowdoin, Maine 04287,  located just south of the Wood School House Road.  This cemetery abutted the historical site of the former North Church.

One of the oldest gravestone in this cemetery is that of Nathaniel Jelison 1750-1804.

South Bowdoin Cemetery

LOCATION:  across from the Bowdoin Center Church, 964 E. Burrough Road,  Bowdoin, Maine 04287.
