The Department’s research focus areas provide the impetus for students’ design investigations, encompassing the production of designs that respond to research findings and considering the inhabitants of the design and surrounding communities to ensure local relevance. Students engage with theory and case studies to develop an approach to making space and form, incorporating systems and technology. A rigorous, iterative, creative process of design postulation and enquiry, testing, evaluation and refinement seeks to push the boundaries of architectural convention.

The Curriculum

Continuing Practice Development (CPD 810)

The CPD module is presented with both generic (multidisciplinary) and disciplinary-specific lecture units. As a year-long module, it is structured along lecture units during which specific themes will be introduced, discussed and evaluated. This module focuses on professional practice, business management and technology and will be presented by a variety of in-house and external specialists. The module aims to expose students to strategies to grow as future professionals who participate in the built environment industry as colleagues, collaborators, innovators, and leaders.

Design Project and Discourse (DPD 801 (Arch), 802 (LArch)

The DPD module focuses on the identification and development of a design problem related to the discipline of architecture, landscape or interior architecture, with a scope and complexity at Master’s level. Students are encouraged to think and work innovatively by embracing an intensive process of design investigation and iteration. By following a research based teaching approach, the Design Project and Discourse is recorded as part of the mini-dissertation document, as well as presented graphically in combination with models and/or prototypes at the final exam as the culmination of the year’s work. The module requires students to synthesize context analyses, design theory, and technical knowledge to develop as flexible, responsive, resilient candidate architects.

Design Investigation (DIT 801 (Arch), 802 (LArch)

Design Investigative Treatise (DIT 801/802) is structured around a central inquiry embedded within a specific research field within the Department. The module considers the student as an individual participating in a collective research team. The module allows students to contribute to a clearly defined research problem and develop a critical investigation centred around a research question related to the field of architecture. Students are required to communicate their research to provide critical, succinct and clear research findings which contribute to the discourse in the context of the built environment. The DIT 801/2 modules are reported as part of the final mini-dissertation documentation.
