Boudewijn Cox was born in Huijbergen (Netherlands) in 1965 and grew up in Rijkevorsel (Belgium).
He received degrees for guitar, chamber music, harmony, counterpoint at the Lemmensinstituut in Leuven, where he also received a degree for composition and
fugue. His works have already received several awards, so as the 'Prometheus Award - 1995', the 'B.A.P. Sabam Award - 1994', and the 'Youth and Music-Award 1998 for
composition'. His "Onyx" for orchestra received a 'Highly Special Commendation' at the Vienna Modern Masters 6th International Orchestral Recording Award
Competition 1997'. Onyx is registered on CD (VMM CD 3044). "Prelude" for piano solo, was compulsory piece in the semi finals of the 'International Music Contest
Queen Elisabeth 1999'. A recording is to be found on 'The Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition of Belgium - piano 1999 - CYP9607". His “Prelude” is selected out of 160 compositions for the ISCM festival 2006 in Miami, Florida. “Da Una Certa Distanza” for orchestra received a first prize November 2006 by the “Förderverein Brandenburger Philharmoniker” during the 2nd edition of the “Brandenburger Biennale” and received its German premier season 2008-’09. Da Una Certa Distanza also received a second prize in the Fourth Composition Competition "Ivan Spassov"- Bulgaria, 2007. 2008 Boudewijn Cox received a grant from the "Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België" where he was in a 3-month residence to work on his Symphony.
His works are played worldwide by a.o. Myriam Bogaerts, Jenny Lin, I Solisti del Vento, Worldbrass, the Flemish Radio Orchestra, the Beethoven Academie, the Moravian Filharmonic Orchestra, the Brno Filharmonic Orchestra, the Czech Filharmonic Orchestra in concert halls going from 'deSingel' in Antwerp - Belgium, the ‘Berliner Philharmonie’ (Germany) 'till 'Carnegie Recital Hall' in New York and the ‘Dvorak Hall in the Rudolfinum (Prague – Czech Republic).
He has been asked several times to be a member of the jury in the international composition competition of orchestral music in Brandenburg, Germany.
November 2022 he was Composer in Residence during the 11th International Antwerp Guitar Festival
April 2004, Boudewijn Cox organized a concert in deSingel, Antwerp, for the benefit of SaSel, an educational project in El Zaïte in El Salvador. Together with his wife he supports this project since 1998. During this concert his "Onyx" for orchestra finally got its Belgian premier.
Important recent commissions including his “Symphony #1”, commissioned by the Czech Filharmonic Orchestra and a "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra", commissioned by the Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen.
Currently he's preparing a violin concerto and new chamber music pieces; one for violoncello and piano commissioned by Yacha Bachmadova and Christian Vladilla and one for violin and piano. Future plans includes an opera.
As from 2006 his compositions are available through Musica Mundana Musikverlag, worldwide distribution by Ricordi.
Boudewijn Cox teaches at the academy in Wemmel since 1993. During 2009-'10 he lectures (ad interim) also composition at the Royal Conservatorium of Brussels. 2016-‘18 he teaches composition and theory at the Academy of Haasrode - Leuven. September 2018-‘20 he was Principal (ad interim) of the Academy of Jette - Brussels. At the moment he’s starting a doctoraat at VUB - Brussels - on the topic “Can a theoretical and practical model be found to realise tension and release in the field of harmony writing in contemporary composition?” September 2020, he drastically changed his teaching assignment to devote himself to composition again
