ACT 1 Notes

INTRO

C & J – You can exit stage right door after your intro

C – I want to show you how to hold your jacket

C – Don’t exit stage until after the end of your line

ACT 1 SCENE 1

Z – Please don’t dust the table; focus on the piano, fireplace, pictures, etc

Z – ‘I’ll answer the door’ – cross immediately to the door on this line; you can stop when Elizabeth asks you a question

ED – Even slower walk please and please project!

C – Your hair needs to be pulled back out of your face a little

C – pg 16 – When you sit down at the chair next to the desk, please cheat the chair out

C – Quiet steps when you exit upstairs

AG – Remember to have your gloves when you first enter

AG – Look at Edgars longer and make it a bigger deal about how weird he is when you say your ‘Buttress of Notre Dame’ line

ED – Look at audience for ‘Lucky if all we get is a storm’ – this has to be very loud and very big

Z – For your line ‘Oh Miss Masters, Miss Lanthrop is dissatisfied with her room’, make sure you are downstage on the platform (otherwise the lights don’t hit you if you are too far upstage)

ED – You can’t blow out a candelabra

C & TJ – pg 22 – TJ, can you try to connect with Celia more when you are sitting at the table? That will make her rejection more comedic

JK & S – When you first see each other, can you please have some sort of vocalization before crossing?

C – You are bragging when you say your ‘Corsage of chrysanthemums’ line

Z – Give the drink to Jack or someone closer to you if need be; you shouldn’t have to exit with a drink in your hand

EVERYONE – When Edgars exits downstage left, please follow him out with your eyes and have very big expressions – he is a strange one!

H – Pick up your cues and lines; you have a few lines where you like to wait before you say them or have long pauses in between

H – ‘Gracious, no?’ – pick up this line

H – Careful with the umbrella (don’t swing it around too much!) – also make sure it isn’t too close to or in front of your face

H – Make sure to look at your watch before Agatha passes back your book; there are inscriptions on your watch that she needs to be able to read, so make sure to have it out!

EVERYONE – pg 30 – I need everyone to have some sort of small movement on the line ‘but which one’

ACT 1 SCENE 2

H – I need you to cross stageright to the doors after ‘You are a prime one suspect’; you are currently blocking the chair that Sally needs to see

EZ – Please stand when you read the will

H – look out to the audience for your line ‘quick mind is essential’

TJ – Don’t stand right behind people; if there are people behind you, counter so that you can be seen (specifically page 35)

Z – pg 35ish – ‘Murder’ NEEDS TO BE MUCH BIGGER PLEASE!

H – I can’t have you fall completely on the floor when you are scared by Agatha

H – You have to explore the molding first before you see that there is something special about it

EVERYONE – Can you please have vocal responses with every clock chime? ALSO the stakes need to be higher; if there is a death after every chime past 13, that means your life is GRAVELY in danger

ACT 2 SCENE 1

TJ – I need a way bigger vocal and physical response when Agatha attacks you

ED – pg 43 – Exit downstage left hallway, not the panel

AG – When Edgars enters from the panel, make sure to counter so that you aren’t standing directly in front of him

H – ‘I’m doing nothing’ – don’t drop the end of this line

ED – You exit RIGHT after you say ‘Pleasant dreams’ – don’t wait for Zenia

C – ‘Commit murder’ – play a little bit with TJ and his shoulders; make him nervous!

ED – I need more vocalization from you and struggle when the Robed Figure takes you

S – Be aware of your PJs when you faint on the couch

H – PLEASE REMEMBER TO CLOSE THE PANEL WHEN THE LIGHTS COME ON after Sally faints

AG – I need some sort of scream or panicked sound when the Robed Figure pulls at your hair

Z – Can you hold your candle lower? You are holding it right in front of your face

ACT 2 SCENE 2

AG – You enter from the downstage right double doors; CLOSE the Elizabeth Masters panel and then you exit downstage left

TJ – Don’t back away when Sally and Jack re-enter from the dining room after ringing the bell; they have to see you first before they see Celia

TJ – We need PJs for you – you should change into them at the same time Celia changes into hers

ACT 3 SCENE 1

CT – YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER THE LETTER!!!

AG – Don’t anticipate that Carter is Lee Rustover; you don’t know yet!

S & TJ – I need a bigger reaction and vocal response to when Carter is announced to be Lee

AG – pg 72 – You have to take the candle off with you before you leave; it is on the desk

S – You have to close the panel behind you before you got to the curtain and hide behind it

Z – When you are hiding up against the wall, look nervous and worried

S – pg 76 – Remember that you have to knock on the panel!

AG – You need to be on the other side of Elizabeth for the reveal; Hannibal should be on one side and you should be on the other

TJ & JK – You should change back into your suits before your last entrance on stage

EVERYONE – PROJECT PROJECT PROJECT! For some reason, this particular run-through was very quiet!

AG – With your wig, you do have to cheat out more and say more of your lines to the audience so that we can see your face

CT – Make sure to say your lines while you are pouring your drink

JK – ‘I’m Carter Forstman’ – has to be a bigger reveal

CT – ‘Forstman’ rather than ‘Frostman’

AG – We can’t have you sit on the platform because the couch covers you; instead, can you lean against the wall when you say ‘I’m confused’?

H – Make sure you close the panel after you show it to them and they get to explore a little bit – it needs to be closed before the fireplace death

ACT 3 SCENE 3

S – Practice ‘the Bells of St. Mary’s’ – you only need to know the last little part

M/W Full Run

C & J – Look at the booth for your announcements; don’t look down!

J – Make it clear he has won you over with his storytelling

Z – Wait to move – stay in your place, until after ‘I’ll go answer the door’

TJ – Don’t stand behind Celia; be to the side of her so that you can be seen

TJ – You can keep the closet door open when hanging jackets; you don’t have to go inside

TJ – ‘Do her bidding’ – can you be closer to Roger for this? Cross to the desk

ED – ‘We’re lucky if all we get is a storm’ – please project and say this very loudly

ED – Your character should move hardly at all – only if absolutely necessary. That is why she calls you the statue on the buttress of Notre Dame

S – For your first entrance, you enter from the hallway rather than from down the stairs

R & CT – If you are too far away from each other to shake hands, just look at each other and nod

Z – Wait to say your line ‘Beware Sally of everyone and everything’ until everyone else has gone up the stairs and out of earshot

S – pg 23 – ‘I must be nervous’ – THIS HAS TO BE SAID AFTER YOU EXPLORE THE PIANO, because during this, the robed figure is looking at you through the picture frame. You keep saying this right as you enter; PLEASE WAIT!

EVERYONE – Bigger reactions and facial responses to Edgars and Zenia when they exit after giving you cocktails

EVERYONE – You need to vocally react and respond to Hannibal’s entrance; most of you should be startled at this event

TJ – Can you be more strict when you tell Celia ‘Sit down, you’re making a fool of yourself’

S – Look out through the doors when you are searching for Roger

S – pg 42 – Please review your lines

ED – pg 43 – You exit the downstage left hall

EVERYONE – pg 43 – everyone should be startled by Hannibal’s ‘Marvelous’

H – pg 46 – You want to light one candle at a time, and you will have to get a separate match to light each candle

H – ‘Oh dear’ – this is a cue line; the lines won’t go back up unless you say the whole line (make sure to say ‘Oh dear’, instead of just ‘Oh!’)

RF – pg 48 – Blow out Sally’s candle after you close the doors behind you

S, AG, H, RF – I want to change it so that Sally faints on the couch; that way you don’t have to pick her up and take her

H – You have to take out your gun and the handkerchief of bullets when you explain why you didn’t shoot the figure after Sally

H – pg 54 – You have to grab the gun from the table before hiding behind the curtain

H – Wait until Jack is fully up the stairs before you say ‘Such an intrepid man’

H – pg 77 – Make sure to close the panel before you leave

H – ‘I highly doubt it’s worth…’ – Make sure you have your face out to the audience for this

C – Curtains are at the door

C – Make sure to have your journal

C – Make sure to respond to Judy’s disgust (are you proud of yourself, do you feel the need to comfort her, etc.)

J – Make sure to look up – we want to see your lovely face!

ACT 1 SCENE 1

Z – Make sure when you are dusting, you dust things above the fireplace, candelabras, etc – probably won’t be dusting the table with a feather duster!

Z – ‘Forces of darkness beyond our knowledge’ – look up and out toward the audience

EZ – “Sister’s Sister-in-law” – Make sure you emphasize the two sisters and enunciate

Z – ‘Rooms are ready’ – this needs to be bigger, enough to scare Celia

AG – Wait until Edgars leaves before saying ‘See him on the buttress of Notre Dame!’

S – Can you curtsy at Elizabeth instead of nod?

S – Feel free to look at and connect with Agatha when you say ‘All I ask…’

Z – Your exclamation ‘Sally!’ needs to be bigger; same with ‘The clock struck 13…’

Z – Feel free to back away whenever you say ‘Don’t touch me’

S – After Zenia warns you about everything, you don’t follow her upstairs because she scares you; but you see the piano, which is a comfort to you, which is why you cross over to the piano – that is your motivation for crossing

JK & S – Need to work when you meet for the first time; it should be extremely over the top and it should be choreographed

JK – ‘Name sounds familiar’ – Stare CT down

S – Find some stage business to do when you are down stage left of the table after the engagement line

S – ‘Thank you Zenia’ – try to touch her

Z – ‘Thank you Zenia’ – back away from her after she tries to touch you

H – Make sure you are checking your list before you identify your people

H – Pick up your cues

H – Have fun during all of this! We want to see you enjoy every part of your first case (specific part is the rowing!)

H – ‘Delved into what I know best – Crime!’ – Make sure this is a different stance; have fun!

H – Make sure to give the book to Agatha after reading the Author’s name

H – Don’t be offended at Carter not having your jacket; just pick up your jacket and go to hang it in the closet

AG – Make sure to stand closer to Hannibal so that you are close enough to actually see the engraving on the watch chain

ACT 1 SCENE 2

AG – Please have a large gesture for when you say ‘Incognito!’ – since you are sitting, we can’t see you!

H – Pick up the pacing for your ‘Perfect’ line

Z – ‘Read the words from beyond the grave’ – higher stakes, please

EVERYONE – REACT to the fact that Hannibal is the one that took the will! How do you feel about this? Show me!

EVERYONE – Remember to vocalize and respond to every new piece of information

CT – Faster pickups for your lines please

JK – ‘Missing person, possible heir’ – Step downstage / center stage to make this a bigger deal

Z – ‘Murder’ – bigger deal

CE – ‘Break the will’ – this needs to be MUCH bigger (there is NO WAY he was sane enough to make this choice!)

H – ‘His or her identity’ – You are mirroring what Agatha did earlier, and subtly accusing her by repeating the statement

S – ‘You are not my Aunt Ernestine’ – please point toward her – it will draw the audience’s eyes more easily in that direction

AG – Use your journal to rip a page out of for Sally’s note

EVERYONE – Vocalizations please!

H – Before you say ‘look again’ – you have to have already looked and identified who is missing

ACT 2 SCENE 1

C – Stand on ‘What did you find?’

AG – Spend more time looking and listening before you say ‘I can’t hear him’

CE – ‘Can’t anyone do something to get us off this island?’ – Stand up on this line – you can sit back down when they tell you to do so

CT & JK – You are too close to each other before your fights – step back a little bit!

JK – ‘What can I say, I’ll go’ – you are taking the higher ground, and you think you are the HERO

CT & S – Please work the slap scene

CT – You don’t need to raise your hands the entire time while Agatha has the fire poker to your back; you can lower them eventually

H – Don’t put down the gun until ‘We found our murderer!’

ACT 2 SCENE 2

S – When you are scared of Zenia, don’t turn your back to her – instead, back away from her

S & JK – I liked your holding hands when you were brainstorming with the bells; but you can let go when you are headed to the dining room

S – Can you find a way to connect with Celia when you say the line ‘Aunt Celia, it looks like you’ve seen a ghost!’

S & JK – Can you have a longer build up to the first kiss?

S & JK – Third kiss needs to be a little longer

AG – Don’t throw away your ‘Lucretia’ line

ACT 3 SCENE 1

AG & H – Work getting over to the desk in a choreographed manner; it will increase the comedy

JK – Make sure to always have your journal with you

JK & S – Can you find some stage business to do right before Agatha identifies Lee Rustover?

S – ‘Dark smudge’ not ‘grease’

S – The ‘lamb’ line can eventually turn out to the audience

H – you have to make a noise before Sally’s line ‘What is the matter?'
