What is Flower?

A flower is a reproductive structure found in flowering plants (angiosperms). It consists of two main parts: the male parts of the flower called stamens, which consist of a filament and an anther that produces pollen; and the female reproductive part known as the pistil or carpel, consisting of the stigma, style, and ovary where ovules are present. These reproductive parts of flower help in pollination and sexual reproduction. Flowers can be classified into two main categories: complete and incomplete. A complete flower possesses all four whorls of parts—sepals, petals, stamens, and pistils. A complete flower consists of two different parts: Vegetative Part and Reproductive Part. On the other hand, an incomplete flower lacks one or more of these structures.

PETAL

The parts of a flower that are often conspicuously colored. They are modified leaf-like parts that surround the reproductive organs of a flower. Petals are the brightest and colorful parts of a flower that distinguish them from other parts.

STIGMA

The part of the pistil where pollen geminates. Head of the pistil that catches pollen grains. It is often sticky in texture or contains tiny hair-like structures to help pollen adhere to its surface.

STYLE

The stalk of the pistil. When pollen grains reach stigma, a tube-like structure grows through the style called pollen tube, which reaches the ovary.

OVARY

The enlarged basal portion of the pistil where ovules are produced. The base of the pistil that holds the eggs or ovules. The ovary later becomes the seed when the male and female reproductive cells fuse together, thereby forming the embryo, a process called fertilization.

OVULE

The ovule is the organ that forms the seeds of flowering plants. Ovules are contained within the ovary, and in the event of successful pollination.

SEPAL

The outer parts of the flower (often green and leaf-like) that enclose a developing bud. Sepals are the first essential part that grows in a flower, arising from the top of the stem.

STAMEN

The pollen producing part of a flower, usually with a slender filament supporting the anther. It is the male reproductive part of a flower. It consists of two main parts: Anther and Filament.

ANTHER

The part of the stamen where pollen is produced. Yellowish sac-like structure present at the head of the stamen.

FILAMENT

Part of the stamen. The slender stalk-like structure present at the tail of the stamen.

RECEPTACLE

The part of a flower stalk where the parts of the flower are attached. It is often enlarged to support the weight of the flower, or the fruit when it develops. Its main function is to both connect the stalk to the flower and to support the flower.

PEDUNCLE

The stalk of a flower, or the stem from which a cluster of flowers bloom.
