The Boston Structural Heart program is the outcome of initiatives taken by tech-savvy Dr. Feroze Mahmood and ingenious Dr. Robina Matyal who have been leaders in Ultrasound education for decades. More than a decade ago, both of them established echocardiography simulation laboratory which has evolved into one of the largest echocardiography simulation centers in the world . The trainees have access to 8 state-of-the-art simulators that can be used for training in transthoracic echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, focused assessment with sonography for trauma (FAST) examination, ultrasound knobology, hemodynamics, and lung ultrasound. The simulators also have a wide range of pathologies and the possibility of evaluating trainee progress with motion analysis.
Dr. Mahmood and Matyal’s journey in ultrasound education has involved teaching perioperative ultrasound courses in Groningen University Medical Center, Netherlands, First Peking University Hospital, Beijing, China, Soroka Medical Centers in Israel, and Colombian Congress of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation, Barranquilla, Colombia. They have also established Annual Perioperative Echocardiography Course since 2010 that offers lectures from world renowned experts in echocardiography, practice hands-on knobology on 3D echocardiography systems from multiple vendors, and study the heart anatomy during our heart dissection.
