Boston Legal is an American legal drama and comedy drama television series created by former lawyer and Boston native David E. Kelley, produced in association with 20th Century Fox Television for ABC. The series aired from October 3, 2004, to December 8, 2008. The series stars James Spader, William Shatner and Candice Bergen. It is a direct spin-off and continuation of the TV series The Practice, with several characters from the eighth season of that series moving to Boston Legal. While never a Nielsen ratings smash hit, the show was critically acclaimed. It received 26 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, including for Outstanding Drama Series in 2007 and 2008.

The American producers of the series also hired the British writer and barrister John Mortimer (creator of the UK legal series Rumpole of the Bailey) as a consultant for Boston Legal.[10]

On November 30, 2004, it was announced that Candice Bergen would join the cast as senior partner Shirley Schmidt,[12] a character the producers had planned to introduce for several months.[13] Lake Bell left the series mid-season, and Ren Auberjonois was promoted to main cast member.[14][15][16] Anthony Heald and Betty White also made regular guest appearances, having both appeared as the same characters on The Practice.

On April 5, 2005, the series was renewed for a second season, although ABC put the show on hiatus in favor of Grey's Anatomy [17] The success of Grey's Anatomy placed Boston Legal on hold until autumn 2005, when it returned for an extended season of 27 episodes.[18][19] Both Rhona Mitra and Monica Potter left the series during the hiatus, while Julie Bowen was cast as Denise Bauer.[20] Ryan Michelle Bathe and Justin Mentell were later cast as junior associates Sara Holt and Garrett Wells.[21] The second episode of season 3 introduced Craig Bierko as Jeffrey Coho and Constance Zimmer as Claire Simms. In episode 11, guest star Gary Anthony Williams joined the cast, with Craig Bierko leaving in episode 15.

On June 4, 2007, TV Guide announced that Ren Auberjonois, Julie Bowen, Mark Valley and Constance Zimmer would not return for season 4.[22] On June 13, 2007, it was announced that actor John Larroquette (former The Practice guest star) would join the cast as a senior partner transferred from the New York offices of Crane, Poole & Schmidt, with actress Tara Summers joining as a young associate. Christian Clemenson (former The Practice guest star), who had guest-starred occasionally as Jerry Espenson (a brilliant but socially inept lawyer), was promoted to main cast.[23] Production also stated that Ren Auberjonois, Mark Valley, Julie Bowen, and Constance Zimmer may return in guest roles.[24] On July 2, 2007, it was reported that both Ren Auberjonois and Mark Valley would return in recurring roles;[25] It was also announced that Taraji P. Henson would join the cast in season 4, with Saffron Burrows appearing in a recurring role. Burrows later became a full-time cast member.[26]

On May 13, 2008, ABC announced that Boston Legal would return for a fifth and final season in the fall.[27][28] Saffron Burrows did not return as a series regular, having joined the cast of My Own Worst Enemy. The final season consisted of 13 episodes to reach the "100" episode mark, which facilitated successful syndication.[29] There was speculation that Boston Legal might receive an additional episode order, if the show had another strong showing in the Emmy Awards and produced solid ratings in its new fall time slot.[30] The season began airing on September 22, 2008.

On June 18 and June 20, 2008 it was reported that Gary Anthony Williams and Taraji P. Henson would not return for season 5 as Clarence Bell and Whitney Rome, respectively.[31][32] On July 17, 2008, Boston Legal was nominated for a series-high seven Emmy nominations, including for Best Drama Series for the second consecutive year. Spader, Bergen and Shatner were each nominated for their respective roles.

Boston Legal's two-hour-long series finale aired on Monday, December 8, 2008 at 9:00PM Eastern/8:00PM Central. David E. Kelley stated in an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on December 7, 2008 that it was ABC's decision to end Boston Legal, and that he "had to fight to bring it back for a short season of 13 episodes".[33]

Note: Each U.S. network television season starts in late September and ends in late May, which coincides with the completion of May sweeps. All times mentioned in this section were in the Eastern and Pacific time zones.

However, at the end of season 3 in spring 2007, the producers decided to cut Paul Lewiston, and Ren was released from being a regular in the cast. Later in the summer, Ren was informed that the writers hoped to bring Paul back as a recurring guest star for several episodes in season 4. In other words, he was back to where he started when the show began! In September 2007, Ren filmed his first guest shot of that season, and continued to appear in various episodes until the very end of the series.

If you want to watch Boston Legal Season 2, we have all the information you need. Alan Shore and Denny Crane are back this season to fight another series of eccentric cases, including the case of a woman murdering her older husband, a congressman getting sued, the CEO of a well-known pharmaceutical company getting heat for unethical testing, and much more.

Created by David E. Kelley, the cast for this season includes the familiar faces of James Spader as Alan Shore, Rhona Mitra as Tara Wilson, William Shatner as Denny Crane, Monica Potter as Lori Colson, Mark Valley as Brad Chase, Candice Bergen as Shirley Schmidt, Julie Bowen as Denise Bauer, and others.

For a period, no TV auteur was more successful or more recognizable than David E. Kelley. A former Boston attorney, he began his Hollywood career with a spec script for a now-forgotten legal comedy starring Judd Nelson. This led to Bochco hiring him as a staff writer for his series LA Law, where Kelley eventually rose to the position of supervising producer. After leaving that show, he created his first series, Picket Fences (1992-1996).

Valley has been in the show since day one but his character hasn'tquite panned out. During the first season he was underused and thisseason his character has still failed to take much storyline. I thinkthat the producers would like to keep him with the show, otherwise hewould have gone during the Season 1/2 break but might have to let himgo - especially as a new male spot seems to be up for grabs.

Bowen's character, while surviving the season, has not been fullydeveloped and I don't think she has mass interest. The setup at the endof Season 2 made it clear she might leave, if a new female lead isjoining the show (such as Parker Posey) she might be kept around(especially with The Squid) for some jealous storylines. She could alsobe a romantic interest for the possible male lead, although we predicthe will be an older character (Tom Selleck or Robert Wagner arerumored).

Just days after county bigwigs went thermonuclear over an episode in which faux POTUS Geena Davis sends in the troops to quell crime in the county (she was also seen in front of a restaurant advertising sweet potato pie, pork chops and chitlins), ABC quietly pulled the plug on the White House drama for the rest of the season. While county big cheeses no doubt wish they could claim embarrassment caused ABC's decision, honestly, the series was done in by ABC's very tight race with Fox to finish the season in first place among young viewers.

Fox. With four weeks left in the 2005-06 TV season, Fox squeaked ahead of ABC among the 18-to-49-year-olds coveted by advertisers. Through last week, Fox averaged 5.2 million viewers in the demographic to ABC's 5.19 million. Last year, Fox needed the Super Bowl to eke out its first-ever season win in the age bracket; this year, it will edge out ABC -- the network that hosted the football game, which is annually the most watched broadcast of the season by a huge margin.

"Boston Legal."ABC has renewed its Monday legal drama that last week nearly doubled its "Less Than Perfect" lead-in audience. This season's "Legal" is averaging about a million more viewers than ABC snagged last year in the time slot with its "NYPD Blue" swan song and short-lived "Blind Justice."

"Commander in Chief."Behind-camera discombobulation has done in the most promising new series of this television season. Once the most watched new series in the prime-time firmament -- a hefty crowd of more than 16 million saw the debut -- behind-camera problems caused ABC to yank the show for long periods, during which young viewers found other viewing habits. Last week, "CiC" clocked just 6.5 million viewers in its Thursday time slot, and a disappointing 1.8 percent of viewers in the golden 18-to-49 age bracket. 17dc91bb1f
