If you want deep, reliable noise cancellation and all-day comfort for travel or office work, choose Bose QuietComfort 45; if you need low-latency gaming performance, massive battery life, and multi-platform connectivity, choose SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7. This isn't a close call between two identical headsets; it is a decision between two very different philosophies of audio. One is engineered to disappear into your world, while the other is built to put you right in the middle of the action. For side sleepers specifically, the trade-offs become even more critical, as the weight distribution and ear cup rotation matter significantly when you are trying to rest without pressure on your ears.
• Bose QuietComfort 45: Delivers industry-leading active noise cancellation with plush synthetic leather cushions for premium comfort, but lacks the ultra-low latency required for competitive gaming. Best for travelers and professionals who prioritize silence.
• SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7: Offers an impressive 50+ hour battery life and simultaneous Bluetooth/2.4GHz connectivity for seamless gaming across platforms, though it relies on passive noise isolation rather than active cancellation. Best for gamers and mobile users needing long play sessions.
The Bose QuietComfort 45 is designed with a singular focus: creating a sanctuary of quiet. This isn't just about blocking sound; it is about actively engineering silence. If you spend hours commuting, working in a busy open office, or flying on airplanes, this feature is not a luxury; it is a necessity. The "Quiet Mode" effectively isolates you from the chaos of the world, allowing you to focus entirely on high-fidelity audio.
Comfort is equally central to its design. Constructed with plush synthetic leather and impact-resistant nylon, these headphones are built for extended wear. The manufacturer emphasizes minimal clamping force, which is a crucial detail for anyone who wears headphones for eight hours or more. The ear cups are over-ear, designed to enclose the ear completely, which contributes to both the acoustic seal and the physical comfort. For those who struggle with the pressure of tight headbands, the specific mention of lightweight materials suggests a design that prioritizes feeling invisible on your head.

However, this headset has clear boundaries. While it excels at music and voice calls, the audio processing is tuned for fidelity and balance rather than the split-second reaction times needed in gaming. The frequency response and driver type are optimized for listening to music where bass remains consistent at lower volumes, but there is no mention of the sub-40-millisecond latency that competitive gamers require. Furthermore, the battery life, while respectable at up to 24 hours, is shorter than what gaming enthusiasts often demand for marathon sessions. You should buy this if your primary goal is to escape the noise around you and enjoy rich, balanced sound. You should skip it if you need to hear every footstep in a game or if you plan to use it for more than a day without charging.
The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 Wireless Gen 2 tells a different story. Its entire ecosystem is built around the needs of the modern gamer who refuses to be tethered to a console or PC. The standout feature here is the sheer endurance of the battery. With an average life of over 50 hours, this headset can last through multiple days of heavy gaming before needing a charge. This is a massive leap forward compared to many competitors, offering over 40% more charge than previous generations. For someone who games late into the night or plays during long commutes, knowing you won't run out of power is a game-changer.
Connectivity is another area where this headset shines. It supports simultaneous 2.4GHz wireless and Bluetooth connections. This means you can be plugged into your PC or console via the low-latency USB-C dongle while simultaneously connected to your phone for calls or mobile games. This dual-connectivity is rare and incredibly practical for a hybrid lifestyle. The inclusion of 360° Spatial Audio support and custom-designed Neodymium magnetic drivers ensures that the audio landscape is detailed enough to pinpoint enemy locations. The microphone technology, specifically the ClearCast Gen 2, is also robust, reducing background noise by up to -25dB to ensure your voice cuts through clearly even in noisy environments.
Despite these strengths, the design philosophy leans heavily towards utility over pure isolation. Unlike the Bose, the Nova 7 relies on passive noise cancellation. While the memory foam cushions provide comfort, they do not actively generate silence against external sounds like wind or traffic. If you are looking for the best rotatable ear cups open ear headphones for side sleepers, you must consider that this is a closed-back design intended for immersion, not necessarily for sleeping flat on your side without any external noise bleed. The weight is lighter at 11.52 ounces compared to the Bose, which might feel less intrusive during long sessions, but the lack of active noise cancellation means you will still hear the world around you unless you are wearing earplugs separately. This pick is for the dedicated gamer who values battery longevity and platform flexibility above absolute silence.
• Best for Active Noise Cancellation: Bose QuietComfort 45. It uses active technology to cancel outside noise, whereas the SteelSeries relies on passive isolation.
• Best for Battery Life: SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7. It offers over 50 hours of playtime, nearly double the Bose's 24-hour capacity.
• Best for Multi-Platform Gaming: SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7. It supports simultaneous Bluetooth and 2.4GHz RF connections, allowing cross-device usage.
• Best for Audio Fidelity and Balance: Bose QuietComfort 45. Volume-optimized Active EQ maintains balanced performance at any volume level.
• Best for Low Latency Gaming: SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7. It features an audio latency of just 40 milliseconds, essential for competitive play.
• Best for All-Day Comfort in Noisy Environments: Bose QuietComfort 45. The combination of minimal clamping force and active noise cancellation makes it superior for travel.
• Best for Voice Clarity in Loud Rooms: SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7. The ClearCast Gen 2 mic reduces background noise by -25dB, ideal for streamers and team chat.
• Best for Side Sleepers (Weight & Pressure): SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7. At 11.52 ounces, it is lighter than the Bose, potentially reducing pressure points when lying on your side, provided the ear cups do not dig in.
In my opinion, the choice comes down to what you value most in your daily routine. If you are a traveler, a remote worker, or simply someone who wants to block out the world to listen to music, the Bose QuietComfort 45 is the superior tool. Its active noise cancellation is unmatched, and the comfort levels are set for long-haul wear. However, for the vast majority of users who are primarily gamers or media consumers on the go, I would choose the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7. The 50-hour battery life eliminates anxiety about charging, and the ability to connect to both a console and a phone simultaneously offers a flexibility the Bose cannot match. For side sleepers, the lighter weight of the SteelSeries model might offer a slight edge in comfort, though neither is a perfect pillow. Ultimately, the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 provides more versatility for a modern, connected lifestyle, making it the more practical investment for most people.
While neither is marketed specifically as a sleep device, the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 is lighter at 11.52 ounces compared to the Bose at 15.68 ounces, which may reduce pressure on your ear when lying on your side. However, the bulky over-ear design of both could still cause discomfort depending on your sleeping position.
The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 wins decisively with over 50 hours of battery life. The Bose QuietComfort 45 offers up to 24 hours, which is excellent for a day of travel but falls short of the SteelSeries capability for multi-day use without charging.
No, the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 includes a compact USB-C wireless dongle and various adapters (USB-C to USB-A and USB-A to USB-C) for plug-and-play connectivity across PC, PlayStation, and Switch. It does not have a traditional headphone jack.
The Bose QuietComfort 45 is not designed for low-latency gaming. It lacks the specific audio latency optimizations found in the SteelSeries, which boasts a 40-millisecond latency. Using the Bose for competitive gaming may result in noticeable audio delay.
