Our house
Our house was built around 1915 with some art-nouveau features.
In 1957, it was completely rebuilt in a modernist style. The current façade dates from this period.
It was the home of general practitioner Hugo Janssens. The magnificent stained glass window above the front door still refers to this medical history. The Reuskenskamer was the doctor's practice at the time. The Moorkenskamer was the parents' bedroom. The waiting room was on the mezzanine floor, where the reception area is now.
The previous owners, Marc & Martine, bought the house in 2001. In July 2020, they opened B&B Borgerhouse here. Since October 2024, we can call it our home.
Photo of our house in 1929 during the Landjuweelenstoet.
Moorkenskamer
Our Moorkenskamer overlooks the Moorkensplein and the monumental former town hall. Moorkens (Lodewijk) was the mayor who had this town hall built in 1886-1889. It has been widely acclaimed as a masterpiece of the Neo-Flemish Renaissance. It was the first town hall in Belgium to have a built-in carillon. It plays a tune from the Reuzenlied every quarter of an hour.
Reuskenskamer
The Reuskenskamer is our largest room and is named after the four giants of Borgerhout: Giant, Giantess, Dolphin and Kinnebaba. The distinguishing feature of these giants is that they are not big, but fat. They express the prosperity that Borgerhout once enjoyed as a wealthy middle-class community. Their history dates back to 1712. That's when the first procession of giants came out. A tradition that is still very much alive.
