Weekly class schedule: Meet on Blackboard's Virtual Classroom on Tuesdays at 11:30 am
Online student feedback: Tuesdays 1 - 2:30 pm AND by appointment
ONLINE FORMAT
This online course will be delivered through Blackboard. It includes synchronous (live lecture/class meeting in Blackboard’s Virtual Classroom “Blackboard Collaborate Ultra”) and asynchronous sessions (discussion forms, videos, websites, etc) available on your course site.
11:30 am - 12:30 pm: The synchronous “live” sessions will take palace on Tuesdays from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm. (Weeks 1-11, *) Please make every effort to be online at that time. With the exception of the first class (which will run a bit longer due to introductions and tech troubleshooting) most sessions will run about 45 minutes to 1 hour and we should be finished our online lecture by 12: 30 pm. This time will be a mix of lecture, short presentations, discussions and group work. If you miss the session a recording will be posted by Thursday or Friday of that week. I strongly advise attending all “live” sessions for the most optimal educational experience. It is difficult to make up for lost time in online courses.
After the live session, we will take a short break and I will be back in the virtual classroom by 1 pm.
1-2:20 pm: The second half of the scheduled class time is less structured (time wise). Some weeks will spent working on weekly homework, tutorials or group work (ie: watching weekly video or website, reading and responding to questions, self assessment exercises or discussion forums for the week). As this part of the course is set up to for you to concentrate in depth on a question or problem, this part can be done during the second half of scheduled class time, or it can be done asynchronously, sometime during the scheduled week.
*Note: Week 12 Review will be a longer online class time.
ONLINE SCHEDULING NOTES:
Asynchronous material: In my limited experience as a student taking online courses, I have found that not getting to weekly asynchronous work quickly, often means not getting to it all: I recommend taking a break after our live lecture, and trying to complete the weekly asynchronous work (watching videos, reading, or answering a few questions) while the lecture session is fresh in your mind. Some of the weekly asynchronous work will be for your participation grade, some of it will be voluntary: all of it will be essential to help build the knowledge base and understanding to complete your assignments well.
Assignments will take extra time, they won’t fit neatly into your allotted 1.5 hours on Tuesday, though some can be started and discussed with me during the second half of our Tuesday class. There are no tests or exams that count for your grade.
Office hours: During the second half of the scheduled course time I will be available in the virtual classroom to answer any questions and discuss the conceptual development of your assignments (blogs and discussion forums). I will have the chat function open during this time to address questions about assignments, course concepts or anything course related. Please contact me on email if you have private matters to discuss and note it may take up to 3 days for me to reply.
Scheduling: Please note that run times for each part of the class are not exact, but we will be finished our session by 2:20 pm all days. I anticipate either of the first two hours may run over depending upon the activity for the week, please do not schedule other classes or group work during this time if you want access to lecture materials, my feedback or other vital information to complete the course. I value your attendance and live participation during the first hour and during the second hour where we have breakout groups.
