Student mentees are eligible if they are in their first year of medical school, not in an MSTP program AND identify as female/ non-binary OR as one of the following races/ethnicities: Black or African-American, Hispanic, Latino or of Spanish Origin, American Indian/Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.
Enrolled medical students will complete on-line baseline (1) and follow up surveys (2). All three surveys will each take less than 10 minutes to complete. Survey links will be sent via email. They will be asked to submit their ERAS personal statement for analysis when completing the final follow up survey after the residency match has occurred. Students will be prompted to provide the contact information of their mentor. During two weeks of their primary research time, the exact dates of which will be determined on an institutional basis, students will be asked to provide live feedback on their experiences according to the Experience Sampling Method (ESM) using an app on their phone. Participating in this research will be a service to future medical students and will also directly benefit the enrolled student. Enrolled students will receive a monetary gift ($150 total) as well as a Boosting MENTORS branded item. Regardless of whether they are randomized into the control or intervention group, your mentor will receive additional training which may enhance your time with them. Students will be given a letter of commendation for participation in Boosting MENTORS which can be added to a CV. Finally, students will have the opportunity to participate in future DPC studies.

All mentors working with a student who has elected to enroll in Boosting MENTORS are eligible to participate regardless of mentor demographics.

At most, mentors be asked to complete nine, 10 minute, eLearning modules whose purpose is to bolster their skills as a mentor. Mentors will not only have the satisfaction of having made a contribution to the future of medical research but also increase their own potential impact through mentor training. Those completing the on-line modules will earn CME credit. All mentors will receive a monetary gift ($75) and a Boosting MENTORS branded item. The Department Chair of their institution will be alerted of their participation. Finally, they will have the chance to participate in future DPC studies.
